K 535(a) CARL AUGUST VON STEINHEIL, 1937, Reverse Cast Iron Uniface Foundry Cast, 98mm X 92mm, AU.
This is a trial cast reverse of a medal that commemorates the founder and inventor of the Steinheil Plant on the occasion of the centennial of the first intelligible message by electric telegraph in 1837. The Inscription reads: “In the year 1855 C.A. von Steinheil founded the optical-astronomical workshops in Munich-Schwabing, after he had since the year 1830 invented and manufactured instruments for measuring in physics, astronomy, photography, and telegraphy.”
Unfortunately I do not have an example of the actual medal in my collection as yet. This medal was cast in 80mm bronze, struck in 36 and 80mm bronze AND struck in 36 & 80mm gold pieces. I haven’t seen a struck 80mm piece which must have been pushing the limits of die striking at the time.
