No, there's another thread around here which mentions the different fonts that PSA has used . I can't remember the name of thread but Jay (qualitycards) posted pics of 3 different types.
Personally I won't buy that card without inspecting it in person. I have seen some of those early year PSA cards and the grading is inconsistent to say the least. One of the cards I saw was a 1965 Mantle that was a PSA 9 and by todays standards would probably be a PSA 7.
PHREAKYDANCIN - Keep in mind, PSA will reholder any of those different font styles for $5.00. And while the cert # will remain the same, the current style will be utilized, so you can have the current uniformity if you so desire....jay

will they really just "reholder it" or will they also reevaluted it , to make sure that it still meets their current grading criteria? Like has been mentioned, the grading has changed over the years and they know that too right?
I would be worried about sending in an old 8 for reholder and getting back a 6 or 7.

Don't believe everything that you read. Since PSA opened their doors, disgruntled submitters (who don't know how to grade) and shady dealers have been talking about how PSA's standards have become tougher. For the past 13 years, people have been saying "the standards have become tougher in the past 6 months". It's really nothing more than hype. They want you to believe that the recently graded cards that they are selling are worth more than they really are.
Weak and strong grades can be found in every PSA holder variation. Stop listening to rumors and learn how to evaluate cards.
<< <i>I would be worried about sending in an old 8 for reholder and getting back a 6 or 7. >>
Why would you be worried? In the fictional scenario you mentioned, you'd be getting back a check along with the 6 or 7.
BIGKID - They do not re-evaluate the card, just reholder it. If they did re-evaluate it, sure the grade could go down, and sure it could go up. In fact, for the reholdering service, the graders do not do the reholdering anyway, they just do the grading...jay
Reid, you are absolutely correct. The PSA serial number swindle is yet another example of dealers trying to take money out of our pockets. It reminds me of the old days, when every card you bought from them was MINT, but every card you try to sell to them was EX, at best.
I am certain that these same dealers will SELL a PSA 9 with a serial number beginning in "0" at 150% SMR; but god help you if you try to sell THEM the same card: "Oh, that's from the early days of PSA. The standards were looser them. I can only give you 10% SMR for that card."
I have some of those early PSA holders with flips that look like they were done on an old Corona typewriter on Joe Orlando's kitchen table. They're just as legit as the type styles that came later. In fact, if you look at Marshall Fogel's PSA 10 Mantle rookie, you'll see it has the same primitive "typewriter" font.
Marshall could get his six-figure Mantle reholdered for $5, but he hasn't. Why should he? Personally, I sorta like the historical aspect that some of my cards were among PSA's original grades.
If you're worried about it having less appeal or value in the eyes of others, just send it to PSA along with $5. They transfer the grade and serial # to the new holder. As someone said, graders are not even involved in reholdering.

Yeah, Plus what if they dinged it while reholdering?!

That dot matrix type was the first used by PSA on their flips... it would have to be at least six (?) years back I think.

What a bunch of unadulterated crap.
