Dig Of The Day (Warning! Ugly Liteside coin!)

Popped it out of the dirt this afternoon. image

image

That looks like your typical eBay picture, huh? image

That's the "before" picture.

Here's the post-cleaning pic.

image

It's the least attractive of my four Seated dimes found, but it has been a long, long time since I dug any Seated silver. Probably six or seven years.

The scratches were already in the coin.

Usually the silver comes outta the ground nice and bright, but this one was totally oxidized. A real booger to clean. Oh well.

This is my eighth piece of Seated silver and my fourth Seated dime.

The others are:
Half dimes1854 (holed, was bent double when I found it- I straightened it)1854 (also holed, but otherwise a nice looking VF-ish coin)18?? (also holed, no date, is a With Stars type)(All my half dimes are holed, including the one Bust coin I've found, an 1829).Dimes1839 (found same site as this)1862 (decent VG-ish coin, found near an 1873 Shield nickel)1877-S (today's find- my first mintmarked Seated coin found)1884 (my first Seated silver, and a nice one)Quarters1855 w/arrowsHalvesOne day, I hope!DollarsIf I dug a Seated dollar you'd have to hospitalize me.

If I cleaned the State quarters with the same "necessary evil" methods that I had to use on that Seated dime, then I could get 'em down to G4! image

Nice find. It’s too bad about the scratches but a treasure anyway.
The Georgia soil must be more benign than the alkali soil out west. Many coins that I’ve seen that my friends have found are not only oxidized but pitted as well.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

Actually, that was the worst-preserved piece of silver I've ever dug here. Usually the silver comes out nice and bright.

Bless me, Father, for I have sinned: It has been about 2 months since my last detection. Since then I've driven past several parks, watched demolition of an 80+ year old hospital and grounds without hunting it, and been invited to one group hunt, which I declined.

The batteries in the Minelab Explorer XS are running low, my friend. The batt'ries are running low...

Nice find, incidentally. My best finds to date:

Maybe I need to get a metal detector myself and cruise the revolutionary battlefields and sites here in New Hampshire ( we have plenty of em). Also along the coast here and in Maine where there have been plenty of old ship wrecks. Who knows what the sea has washed in over timeimage Another nice find LordM!

I dream of gettin' up to New England and puttin' the coil to the soil. Those dreams are second only to my dreams of detectin' in Old England.

Yes, several companies do. Complete with pre-approved sites, staff archaeologists to ID your finds, castle banquets and activities for non-detecting spouses, and so on. You might see a busload of overfed Yanks waving detectors and sandwiches near you one day! I only hope to be one of those Yanks! (I certainly fit the bill on the "overfed" part). Jimmy Sierra is the semifamous host of probably the most publicized tours. Seems like somebody in their tour group gets a Celtic stater or similarly droolworthy lovely on almost every trip. They might "salt" the fields a little beforehand, but I can tell that many of the finds are "natural".

  • Nice Find! I had a metal detector when I was a kid, but all I found was bottle caps. I couldn't go to the good spots because they were all protected. Maybe I didn't find anything good because it was a cheapy from Radio Shack. ???

In the old days, Radio Shack detectors were cheap Korean-built models- not very good. Now, however, the Bounty Hunter detector company builds Radio Shack's nameplate machines. Bounty Hunters are cheap, lightweight machines, but not necessarily "cheap" in a deragatory way. They pack a lot of bang for the buck and are good starter machines for beginners. I've seen them outperform more expensive machines (in some features, they are even superior to Garrett, who built both my previous machine and the new one I have).

The detector is only a small portion of the equation for success. As in real estate, it's location, location, location. And as in anything, persistence pays off. There's always an element of luck, but those who are persistent at something make their own good luck by increasing the odds in their favor.
