GOETZ: K-306 Father State

Opus 306 FATHER STATE (Vater Staat), 1923, Cast AE, Incuse edge punch, UNC, 62.8mm, 69.30g

A satire on the heights of inflation and the belief that only work and prayer can help the country on its way to recovery. Obverse: Barefooted Father State holds 1-Pfennig coin with the inscription: “Ten Billion Mark in paper – That is one copper penny. The former is very much, the latter very little.” In exergue (upper line) “The State” Reverse shows French African soldier overseeing working family with the inscription in exergue “The People”, the Legend “Pray and Work” (by leaving the letter I out of the word ARBEITE (work) Goetz was able to create an endless circle of the words bete und arbeite, thus, BETE-UND-AR-BETE-UND-AR-BETE-).
