1961 Topps Dice Game/1970 Topps Cloth

Anyone remember the last time they saw one example for sale? If so, where, when and how much?

    Andrew,

I have never seen the 61 dice game... ever. And I think I saw 70 Topps Cloth in a Kit Young catalog years ago (sticks in my mind because it was on the same page as 73 Pinups or 74 Puzzles -- I was looking for a Ryan)... but I don't recall the details. You certainly don't se them surface very often.

How 'bout you? Seen any around?
  • Never, but I haven't been looking until I returned to the hobby last November. Years back, I anxiously awaited my SCD for hopes of seeing something that I needed. I could count the number of times I saw a Venezuelan, pre-1977 OPC, 68 3Ds, etc. It's amazing how limited our options were before Ebay/Internet. Now, there’s 1980 Pepsi's and T207 Lowdermilks a mouse click away. I posted a topic regarding if wantlists were considered SPAM, apparently some don't think so. An example of the aforementioned would certainly be on that list.

i can't ever recall seeing any 61 topps dice game nor have i seen a 70 topps cloth. not to long i saw a couple of 72 topps cloth on ebay that went for a suprisingly low dollar figure.
i'm not really into the obscure stuff but i would sure love to get my hands on some 68 topps 3-d, especially the stottlemyre.

Do you have a 73 pinup or comic? I have heard about these but never seen a pic of one.
  • This topic was discussed a few months back--here's a Topps Game Kaline:

I have a '73 Topps Test Comic Killebrew that I'll try and remeber to bring and post tomorrow.

I faintly remember the topic. That's one of the few Dice Game images I've seen besides the Mantle. I wonder what the Kaline would fetch?

So, it seems as if a few collectors remember seeing a Dice Game and 1970 Cloth sample. What about the 1966 Punchout, not to be confused with the 1967 Punchboard?

Jeff... I don't have either. They are tuff tuff and tuff to find. Murcerfan had a 74 Puzzle on eBay last year and I got out bid around the $300 mark. The puzzle was not trimmed well so I didn't go higher. But, I later found out (from murcer) that it was produced with a rather bad miscut and they are all like that. Had I known that back then, I would've gone higher. I have never seen the comic. It may be the rarest of all the early 70s Ryan stuff (73 Candy Lid, 74 Puzzle, 74 Deckle). Although there IS a 1970 cloth sticker of Ryan (Ryan Saves the Day). I guess about 20 exist. If one of those found it's way to ebay, Katie Bar the Door!!

Great Don West line. Someone on the boards has a Ryan puzzle for sale (miscut pretty badly as well) but I'm not willing to spend over $500 on anything right now, no way no how, no matter what it is. I checked the pop reports for the candy lids, and right now there are only 3 6's and 1 9. I'm pretty happy overall - I know there are better ones out there but on my budget this one fits the bill - hopefully I won't be forced to sell it anytime soon. It's just so hard to not fritter away money right now on things like cable and phone bills when I could just as easily be wasting that money on my registry.

    67standup

Speaking of cool Topps test issues, does the 67 standup Mantle belong to you? I was wondering whether the SC+ Mantle from two years ago is the same as the GAI 8 Mantle in the Mastro auction about a year ago. That is a very very nice card.

    Koby
  • Hi Koby,

I have that icon for a few illogical reasons. One, the '67 Topps Stand-up Yaz (along with the '66 Punchout Yaz (not to be confused with the '67 Punchboard) are the items that I most seek. Unfortunately, I do not have a jpeg of either. Therefore, if anyone does, I'll pay a royalty fee so I can use the likeness to represent myself on these boards. So the Mantle it is. The other reason is that I passed on purchasing the '67 Stand-up Mantle around 1998, one of the few buying decisions regrets I have (besides obvious hindsight for cards that are now worth 10x value.)

Not sure if they are the same as I took a hobby hiatus between 1999 and November 2003. Most items reappear, but some only do so about every five years, e.g., the recent 1977 Jackson Orioles in which I was sniped image

  • Some background that many of you have seen before

    (taken from OBC)

    1961 Dice Game
Perhaps taking a cue from the success of the APBA baseball game, Topps produced this black and white set in 1961. While the Topps name does not appear anywhere on the product, the quality of the cards and the typefaces used clearly mark these as a Topps product. At 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", they also have the same dimensions as regular issue 1961 cards. One player per position from each league is included and while not all are superstars, every player was an All Star at one time or another. These cards are extremely rare and the Mantle card is probably the holy grail of all Topps cards.. Of course, considering that it sells in the mid to high four figures, not too many people could afford one anyway. That is, provided more than one exists: in 1985 only one known set had been reported, along with a handful of singles. It is doubtful this set was ever legitimately released based on the low number of extant copies. In fact, when Topps issues are this scarce I have to think that Woody Gelman was involved in their introduction to the hobby.

    1970 Cloth
Along with the 1961 Dice Game, this is the rarest Topps issue from the Sixties (1970 is the last year of the decade of the Sixties-honest). Very little is known about these replicas of 1970 regular issue cards, although they do have blank backs. My guess is that Topps stripped off a two or three rows (three if the 1972 Cloth Stickers are any indication) of eleven cards from an uncut sheet and turned them into stickers. There may be only one of each sticker, making this among the last of the possible Gelman jobs, although he may have pulled off one or two others before his death.

67standup...I would be more than happy to lend you (royalty free of course) a jpeg of my '67 Topps Stand-up Yaz. It is not perfect as you can see from the wrinkles next to Yaz's head, but it is the best one I have! image

I am a total Newbie to posting (although I have been a troll/lurker for upwards of two months). As you noticed I am sure, I knew enough to use the new emotion icon for shame. I have enjoyed reading most of the threads in that time, and have already learned a ton of stuff.

I have been collecting baseball cards since 1967, and have been collecting with a vengeance since 1982 or so. I won't have any expertise in prewar cards (the folks on the Network54 site scare me a bit) but I might have my share of IMO and IMHO thoughts about Topps test issues and such.

    Dave,
I agree with you that some of the items on this thread are amazing. These are the threads that I never tire of!

P.S. It is interesting that the two icons that I would have chosen as my own from the assortment available to Newbies were yours and 67standup's. 1969 Topps was my first love, and the 1967 Topps Standups cards were/are my holy grail.

P.P.S. How long before I get to choose an icon of my own?

  • Bob,

You should be able to upload your own icon on Tuesday the 15th. I believe the time frame is business hours in the Pacific time zone. The 15th of each month is "new icon" day unless it falls on the weekend. Are you working on a PSA 1969 set?

  • Bob,

You provided a sought after icon and now I know two people who have one, the other is the person who wrote "Yaz 2", an interesting book about Yastrzemski collectibles. Could you share how you found the item, EBay, SCD, auction house, private collection, etc? Price? Any other Standups?

    Zodiac,
Thanks for the info on uploading icons. I guess the commotion during the middle of May must have been the rush to upload. It will take me at least a couple of weeks anyway to pick something appropriate. image

I'm don't think I'm working on a PSA 1969 Topps set. I currently am complete in '69 raw, with PSA 8 stars. There are a couple of stars that I want to purchase in 8 just because my raw cards are a bit OC.

I am still not sure what my immediate plans are for PSA and the set registry. In 1969 alone, I could send in complete sets for Topps regular, Topps super, Topps stamp panels (4 card panels), Topps stamps (singles), Topps deckle, Topps decals (two sets), Topps 4-in-1s, O-Pee-Chee (have two sets), O-Pee-Chee deckle, Milton Bradley (still in box), Kahn's weiners, Globe playing cards (already have Mantle PSA 8), and Citgo coins. image Downside...I would be out of money just in grading fees. image

I need to confess that I have never submitted a card to PSA (or anybody else for that matter).image I am going to need a lot of help from you guys to get me over that hump.

    67su,
Sorry, for the slow reply. I went to bed (what was I thinking!!!!)

I wasn't aware of the Yaz 2 book. I'll wander over to Amazon when I finish typing to check it out.

I acquired Yaz as part of a '67 Stand Up proof set, Mastronet auction Saturday, November 17, 2001 (Old Judge Cover catalog, page 232). Price? I'd share that over a drink (or two) during the set registry luncheon, but let's just say it did not come cheap. Bob's Standard Catalog pricing for these cards is pretty accurate (although his disclaimer about the 25% to 50% discount for thin-stock proof versions gets my goat...image ... we need an icon for goat).

I had a long history of lusting after Standups. Guy at show in 1983 with about 12 of them at $100 per (too expensive). Beautiful F. Robinson at local card shop for $350 (too expensive). When the set came into my radar, I was too in love to pass. image

Don't want to seem like a stalker, but I have followed your posts with great interest (OPC especially) and I look forward to hearing more about your collection and direction. I was disappointed that you did not win the 77 Jackson proof. It would have had a good home!

    Bob;

Welcome! You sound well-versed in your Topps oddball and test issues! I look forward to reading your posts and picking up some more tips.

Unfortunately, I just divested myself of my Yaz collection to a local fellow Yaz fan on these boards (You know who you are!), so I won't be of too much help directly. But, I love talking about and learning more about scarce Topps issues. I am in the hunt for some tuff Nolan Ryan issues -- the 70 Cloth Sticker, 73 Pin Up, 73 Candy Lid, 74 Puzzle. If you come across these in your travels. I'd love to find out about it!

    See ya around! image

Where have you been all my collecting life Mr. bobsbbcards? I have complete or very near complete OPC sets for 1965-1976,1980, the only one I'm missing is....(drum roll please)...1969.

In regard to 1967 Stand-ups, I remember passing on a proof set that Alan Rosen had around 1997, not at the bargain opportunities you had, but a regret nevertheless.

I had a 1969 4on1 Yaz proof won from Hager's auction in 1999, but that and a number of other proofs/one of kinds were stolen.

Just so you know, Mile High’s bid on the Orioles Jackson was ~$2900 with 15 seconds left, I topped it with $6000, then got sniped by a very deep pocket collector, who already owns another copy. If anyone were to win it, I’m glad it was him. Lost on the ’35 Lajoie too. Hey, where’s my runner-up consolation prize?

    packCollector,
Thanks for the compliment on the card and the collection. I unfortunately do not have any extras in the 4-in-1s. I was able to mow through them about 5 years ago and fortunately (for me) was able to get top quality singles (bought quite a few from 707). Guessing from your ID (packCollector) that maybe you collect unopened packs. I do too, and since we were on the subject of 4-in-1s, I have an unopened pack of those as well.

    CON40,
It is fun that those posters who I have been most interested in talking to (you being near the top) are coming out to say hi! I am not a Yaz collector at all (despite the jpg announcing my arrival). I feel like I could BS with you boys in the Ryan group for quite some time. I don't have the 70 Cloth Ryan (darn), but I do have the 73 Candy Lid and 73 Pinup (although not the 73 Comic). I also have a beautiful 68 OPC Ryan PSA 8 and 85 Mini Ryan (raw but gorgeous). I have looked through your set registry listing and am quite impressed with the high grades and neat cards you have. Congrats!!!

    ----------------------

    Cubfan,
I will post a pick of a 70 Cloth when I get home from work (6 EST). This set has been one of the joys of my collecting life so far since they are so few and far between. I have 6 of the 19 (Standard Catalog is missing Gentry still).

    ----------------------

    67standup,
Sorry I haven't been there for you (group hug). If you are interested, I would be glad to sell you my other set of 69 OPCs. I would have no problem at all mailing it to you upfront and have you look it over. If you don't want it, mail it back. If you like it, we can figure out a price then.

I wonder if the 67 Standup proof set is the same one. I am also surprised that I missed the Rosen set (was it in an auction?) Sorry to hear about your proofs being stolen (outside of my family's health, stolen cards or fire are my worst nightmares).

I guess your consolation prize is you still have your cash. image

OK... you have me drooling to the point I've already changed my shirt 4 times since I read your post. If we don't chat, I'm afraid I'll pass away due to dehydration by nightfall! I already called my broker and have begun the process of liquidation! Perchance, are any of these Ryans available for sale/trade/body parts or vital organs? I also have two little boys I sired for just this type of emergency transaction! Please PM me at the little lock icon on my post!

We must talk. I'll make you an offer you CAN'T refuse!
  • Zodiac: thank you for the headsup. I have ebay listings automatically sent to my email for every OPC year, but never set it up for 1969 since I didn't need to upgrade any cards (since I don't have the set.) I haven't really been searching for that set, as it wouldn't be too difficult to find one through my OPC network once I really had to have it. Case in point, I finally got around to buying a 1972 set. I'm probably going to pass since the condition is lower than I wanted and it's not complete. There's a great joy in completing sets, but am already doing that with the '66 and '67. For the '69 I just want to purchase it complete.

Bobsbbcards: since your new to these boards, you might want to enable your profile for private messages, unless you already know about this and opted not to (as some have.) I'd be interested in purchasing your spare. I thought about it, but go ahead and throw in the Yaz Stand-Up. image

    Jeff,
Actually, my ebay ID is exactly like my name here, but I have not had it a long time. I used to have my email address as my ebay ID until the spam monkies had sent me so many ads for increasing this part of me 3 inches and decreasing that part of me 3 inches that I had had enough!! (Note to self...don't get these products mixed up).

I think that I have only purchased one PSA Ryan (69 Topps), and I have never sold anything on eBay ever. image

This is truly pitiful, isn't it. I had never posted till yesterday; never sent a card to PSA, SGC, GAI, BGS, or anywhere else; and never sold anything on eBay or in any auction (I tried once with Mr. Mint but alas, it did not work out). Is there an emoticon for ultimate Newbie?

I actually can't remember if I have bought anything from these guys auctions before, so caveat emptor. It is kind of cool though, in the listing of the lots, they show time left in hours (204 hrs as of this posting!). Isn't that like 15 years. image
