David,
I'm curious what your opinion is on buying lower grade coins to complete a set versus only buying a few higher grade coins and never being able to finish. I received advice from a large coin firm that I should sell off most of my cheaper coins and focus on a smaller number of more expensive coins. While I conceed that the higher graded keys in my set have gone up in value at a faster rate than the cheaper coins, I guess I am more of a collector at heart than an investor. Any thoughts?

The answer depends upon your priorities. If completing your collection is your highest priority then buying lower grades makes sense. Between 1985 and 1997, I put together an extensive set of 1948 to 1957 sportscards. I would buy whatever grade I could find to complete a set. i then would upgrade wherever and whenever possible. it was a lot of fun and I ended up making a little money too.
Thanks,
David
