Just curious what members think is the rarest coin (minted before 1950) that is available for under $500.00.

You will pay a bit more for one of these (I'd say around 650$), but I think that mint state 61 and 62 later date three cent silvers represent great rarity for the buck.

Check out the mintages on those puppies....

Good question, I'm curious about this also!

But it should be clarified as a mintage rarity, condition rarity or slabbed pop rarity?

Let's go with the a mintage rarity with a minimum grade of AU55...

1864 proof Two Cent Piece. Only 100 minted. They can sometimes be had in PR62 or PR63 for under $500.

How about the 1909-S Indian Head penny. Low mintage yet still affordable. You generally can't get a BU example but you should be able to get an VF to XF example for under $500.

1876-P twenty-cent piece . . . in circulated condition you can find them for under $500 and they had an original mintage under 15,000 . . . with lots melted.

Most proof indian head cents only have mintages in the low 1000s and many can be had for under $500.

Going by availability in the market and not by mintage figures,
I'd say the 1883-S $10 Liberty Head ("Coronet") gold in AU58
    (Greysheet "bid" is $400).

But I don't have any population reports to look through.

This doesn't meet the AU-55 requirement, obviously, but I think that 1848 seated dollars are very underrated. Nice big pre-EIGHTEEN-fifty coin with a mintage of a scant 15,000. You can get a high-end fine for 500 bucks. They're not easy to find.

Russ nailed it. Not many people seem to like these coins so the prices have been relativly low for as long as I can remember

Didn't even know the mintage, even though I had a complete set of circs. May need to watch for one. (Escpecially after the registry forum owner is talking about how great coins with mintages of 7,000 are)
