Who are these guys?

I'm a newcomer. I've been around on these boards just a few months, but I am getting exceedingly distracted by incendiary, rascist bigotry informed by some posters. I have found a constantly uncomfortable flow of garbage mixed with what I feel to be highly informative, interesting and entertaining posts. I'm pretty certain these rabble rousers didn't just appear this year. I'm assuming that those of you have been around for some time have seen the same gang of message board hoodlums reappearing over and over. I get that some of them are the same guy and some are not. I also get that they all have relatively low post numbers, except in cases of those who post 10 or 20 times on their own threads over and over, seemingly for no other reason than to build up their post count.

This crap is turning me off to this forum. I respect the board's cumulative knowledge and look forward to learning something new everyday. But I make choices in my life, and at my ripe old age, chose long ago to stay away from those who spew hateful nonsense. And yet - here it is, right here in my backyard. I guess my question is: can't the moderator simply shut down those who would get stoned in public for saying the things they post here? Free speech is clearly not a right or issue on these boards, as evidenced by moderater-censoring of threads that get out of hand. I'm not sure I know how I feel about that, but I do know how I feel about the spiteful hatred and stupidity regularly embodied in certain members' postings.

I'm at a crossroads - I don't know you guys personally; I've had some very pleasant communications with some fellows on these boards and I would hate to leave. I dunno, I just dunno....

Edited to add: Please don't ask if I'm referring to you. If you have to ask, look inside for the answer.

You can get out of this board exactly what YOU want to.

You can ignore the clowns or you can read the garbage, think about it, and reply with bewilderment.

    Try option #1,

    Loves me some shiny!
  • Personally, I don't read the garbage. If someone has a beef and is willing to air it publicly, I have no interest being part of it. My interest is inversely related to loudness with which someone announces it.

I read the threads as if I was reading them to my sons. (6 and 3) If I would not say it to them, I stop reading and go to another thread.

That's certainly why I rarely post anymore. Many of the more informative folks are gone or post much less often. Is it just the people on the forum or is it a bigger issue with grading, eBay fraud, or PSA? It's probably all of these factors and many others.

I miss the not so long ago days of....Davalillo. Contraversy flew...but was it not informative reading? Did it not raise valid questions?

Stump is gone and his yard sale continues daily. That's an ugly and regretable situation. Many other credible folks are unsettled as well. I'm one of them (unsettled that is).

I think we as a group of enthusiastic collectors miss people like Jim Crandall and Dave Jacobs around here. Hell, even david Vargha has slowed his volume of posts down to under 200 a week. What's that tell everyone? image

I actually enjoy reading just about everything on these boards. I have learned a lot about cards but I also enjoy reading when a "scuffle" breaks out. I'm pretty open to everyone's opinion on any subject. I find it fascinating to hear the extreme opinion on both sides of an argument. I'm the same way with TV too. I can watch Cspan for a while, then flip it over to MTV to hear the latest Hip Hop video, then turn on Bill O'Reilly and really watch the fireworks begin. I have a huge range of interests so I'm usually entertained to hear people talk about anything.

You will be happy to know that Jim "The Gossip Queen" Crandell is still an active poster of unconfirmed rumors on various non-CU forums. He is just doing it on the seedier forums joining the likes of MW and other discredited gossip-mongers like MW.

    Morrel,

I Have been a part fo these forums for a while and i could tell you that its ciclical (sp) the BS comes and goes ...

You really shouldnt let it get to you.

Stump was a nice guy and its a shame he decided to sell off, Dav got too distracted by the inner politics of grading and had become really bitter and angry ...i dont miss him

i do miss Zardos ,Crazy Solomon and waittilltheytrytosell.

even though i know its an impossible job i wish the moderator would step up a little bit more, at least with the very obvious posts that contribute nothing at all , not even humor.

This board has no moderator, as far as I can tell.

Mark -- Your best bet is to email Joe Orlando what you wrote above but name some names. If he gets enough complaints, he'll get tired of it and have his board people knock the ID of the offender(s) off the board. I know they come and go, but after a while they'll get tired of having to create new ID's and they'll go find someplace else to haunt. Unfortunately, its the only way. Ignoring them works for a while but gets frustrating to have to do it day after day. Communicate THAT to Joe also.

I've also pretty much given up creating new posts and I don't post many follow-ups anymore either, thanks to the self-appointed board president (I think most know who that is).

I personally love this board, but I view it like TV. If it's something that interests me I'll watch it (read the post), If not, I'll change the channel (go to the next post). To expect this or any board to never offend you is asking too much in my opinion. In my mind, the knowledge that is available on this board far out distances the occasional rants. just my two cents...

Thanks for the input, guys - I think my lesson here is to let it go. The crime fighter/spiderman inside me wants to rise up against injustice wherever it's found - MorrellMan has to take what he likes and leave the rest.image

    Dear all,

If you don't like certain threads, don't read them. I know of no law requiring mandatory post consumption. Who cares what people write? It's an open forum. Baseball cards are not a matter of national security. The Vaginal Hand Puppet board is probably more substantial then this site.

As Calleocho says, "The boards are cyclical." There are highs and lows. Joe Orlando has better things to do than track down naughty people on a meaningless message board.

Also, naming names sounds like something from McCarthyism. Scott, you're probably the biggest whiner about grades on this board. Your posts are never anything more than the ramblings of a disgruntled postal clerk. That's fine. I don't know you. I don't dislike you because of this. Maybe you have made some points. I don't know. However, if you're suggesting people should be singled out for not placing harmonious posts, you have absolutely no self-awareness. I've never seen you make an educated post strictly about cards. Grades are always the center of your posts. If you are such adept at grading, why not apply for a job at PSA? Otherwise, spare us all your self-righteous bullrefuse or include yourself on your Joe list.

People come and go on this thing. They add what they can and move on. I miss the days of Love Boat and Fantasy Island, but crying about it isn't going to bring them back. There are plenty of intelligent posters still contributing. In a few years, you'll all be yearning for these days. It's human nature.

You have two choices in life-Spend your time complaining or spend your time doing something to improve the situation. Censorship, while legal on a private board, is stupid. The moderator does a perfectly great job of not abusing his power. Bad posts disappear off the bottom of the first page. Good posts lurk.

So, have a few drinks and get over it. There's no justice. There's no right or wrong. There's just a huge area of gray out there. Do your best and hope others do their best.

    Good for you.
  • Scumbi -- I already posted a message saying that I was no longer going to post anything negative regarding PSA's grading. I guess you must have missed that. Or can you find something I posted to the contrary since I said that? I don't know you either but unless you can back it up with proof, don't say it.

    Scott,

I don't read your posts anymore. I read this one by accident. I'm glad you're not posting anymore "Grading whinejobs". However, that doesn't erase the fact that all you used to do was complain. I don't have to prove anything. There are plenty of people that have done less than admirable things and sworn a new course in life. It's definitely a positive. However, those things don't all disappear because you decide they do. And, you should not be the guy heading "the finger pointing brigade". Think about it for a minute before you respond. I'm simply making sense. Show you are the bigger man by not turning into a fifth grader.

    Best,

I apologize if I have in any way contributed to any member's disgruntlement with this forum. If part of the background for this post has to do with the outlandish throwdown I got into with another board member who really got my goat by going, IMO, above and beyond any means necessary just to irritate me - then continue to exaserbate the issue with PM's rubbing it in - then I am guilty.
He got the better of my emotions, which resulted in a massive abnoxious and odiferous response on my part (aka - brainfa*t).

So, I too have now learned the lesson to take a pass on posts that will result in no benefit, and possibly result in no good. I am in no means the card expert that many on the boards are - that's why I came on here in the first place - to learn. And a lot a fun can be had along the learning curve with the good natured counter punching and humor that takes place. So that's the mode I will remain within going forward and hope I can somehow make a contribution along the way. Thanks DH.

MorrellMan, you are definitely a worthwhile contributor to this forum, and I appreciate your postings. I know what you mean about the ignorant posts, but unfortunately, that can be said about practically every forum around. This one does have (and I have posted on a lot of them) the best mix of posters, and the most knowledgeable collectors. I would stick it out if I were you, and ignore the less informed posters.

I do take issue with those that want to sit back and whine about all the good posters being gone. There are a lot of great posters still here, and this forum is what you ultimately make it. If you want to improve it, then add to it. We are all collectors with something to offer, and I am certain that when we stop posting here, a new crop will simply take our place.

I haven't been feeling well. And quite frankly, as a one-armed, gay, dyslexic, black man who is a member of the Nation of Islam, I have become inured to the taunts and mocking over time.

Morrellman...I agree racism and bigotry does not have any place in this forum....NEVER! But I agree with Mantlefan...I have not seen any posts/threads of this kind. We are all grown men here and a little controversy never hurts from time to time. I have dealt out and received my fair share of negativity...but I am still here and I will help anyone here in their card collecting endeavors when I can.

I think this is blown out of proportion...the majority of posts here are informative, helpful, and not shouting matches.

Well at least you have rythym, can read backwards, and accessorize. I'll need help on the benefits of the one-armed thing guys.

Aside from the useless infighting that was posted on other sections of this board over the weekend, I have seen no true bigotry or racism. Yes we have made some off color jokes, but that was just to offset a comment from someone who took a post in the wrong way.

Hopefully we can all continue to aproach this thing in a fun manner and keep up the light hearted atmosphere.

there was a thread that GRADINATOR (YLDER RIZA) laced with venom , racial undertones and ignorant, radical damaging syphlis fueled ramblings. it got out of control and was (rightly) removed. it struck a raw nerve with DIRTYHARRY and myself. i made some over the top remarks that may have been taken out of context when i suggested that he (GRADINATOR) should commit suicide. no apology to the GRADINATOR but i offer a sincere apology to anyone i may have offended.
people like this have to be dealt with and i felt compelled to do so, from some of the PM'S i received i suspect he has more than one pseudonym on these boards.

Highend, Dave, CTSoxfan and everybody else: I guess I'm not alone, and, IMHO, no one needs to apologize for words used in chasing riff raff - DH and a lot of you others are my heroes as well. Thanks for not taking me to task for expressing my frustrations. I think I'm better now.
