How overprinted are these popular 1980's Cards?

Hello fellow collectors,

With all the talk of overproduction of 1980's cards, I am wondering if all of you do actually have the key cards of the 80's.

Are you missing any of the following:

1980 Topps R. Henderson
1982 Topps Traded/Topps/donruss/Fleer Cal Ripken
1983 Topps/Fleer/Donruss W. Boggs
1983 Topps/Fleer/Donruss T. Gwynn
1983 Topps/Fleer/Donruss R. Sandberg
1984 Donruss/Fleer/Topps D. Mattingly
1984 Fleer Update R. Clemens
1985 Fleer/Donruss/Topps R. Clemens
1985 Topps M. McGwire
1987 Fleer/Donruss B. Bonds
1987 Donruss K. Brown
1987 Donruss M. McGwire
1987 Donruss R. Palmeiro
1987 Donruss G. Maddux
1988 Fleer/Score Tom Glavine
1988 Score Update Roberto Alomar
1988 Score Update C. Biggio
1988 Fleer E. Martinez
1988 Fleer Update John Smoltz
1989 Fleer/Upper Deck/Score/Donruss K. Griffey
1989 Upper Deck R. Johnson
1989 Upper Deck G. Sheffield
1989 Donruss Curt Schilling

I left some out, but these are most of the sought after cards. I have most of them, but I am missing a few. If they are all so overproduced, we should have them in our collection.

I remember a previous thread about the B. Bonds card. Every one does have multiples of Barry Bonds, so the price cannot go as high as Micky Mantle. I do have multiples of Bonds rookie card.

The cards you mention are all over produced compared to cards from before 1976. I think it was in 1977 topps really began a mass production. However with that said those cards are scarce in graded form 9 and 10.......imo

between 1967 and 1976 cards also were produced in mass as to compared to those prior if memory serves me.
    Good for you.

  • I am disgusted to say that I just sold my '87 Fleer Barry Bonds BGS 9.5 tonight on Ebay for a whopping $833.00 To be honest, that is like a $375 loss. His cards are definitely overproduced, but right now it is his homer drought ( blamed on all the walks ), and his team's bad performance. Oh, I also forgot that people are realizing that Beckett has graded trimmed cards. That will not help the card.

A few Hermida Chrome Gold Refractors, about (20) '01 Titanium Football rookies/75 each, a ton of David Garrard Auto/low serial numbered rookies, and some other prospects that I feel will make it one day. Not big just yet though. That is my collection pretty much now.

I do have about 20 different rookies etc.. that I will be sending into PSA shortly. Other than that and what I just named above, I am dry. Oh wait, I do have a '98 Score Peyton Manning RC Auto BGS 9. Only 100 were auto'd and graded, and I have one of the 9 BGS 9's that exist. Finally, I am complete.

So, in a nutshell, I don't have too many of those cards. Not too much room for profit on the stuff graded after '86 or so. I've learned my lesson.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

I've actually only got 10 cards on the list. I stopped collecting in 1983 when I was 13 or so. I got back in in 1991, but I never went back and got what I missed, except for a 1989 UD set (had to own the milestone) and a 1985 Donruss set (just because I liked the looks of it). In 1992 I bought a Fleer Bonds (after his second MVP, I figured he's pretty good) and a couple Donruss Maddux RCs (at $2 apiece for the new Cy Young winner, not much risk there).

BTW, Bonds has a .133 SLG in the month of May, but a .460 OBP. Absolutely freaky. He also hasn't hit a homer in almost a month. This is not a good time to sell.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Maybe not statistically, but financially it was for me. I needed the $$$$.

The '86 Topps Traded Tiffany looks like a solid, can't miss card. Hold it's value at least.

DG...I've been nagging PSA to set up a registry set of exactly those cards: The top rookie cards of the 80's! I got only a perfuctory "we'll think about it" in a return e-mail. (I'd add the 88 Score Mark Grace to your list, too; and maybe 86 Canseco and 87 Larkin.)

    Good idea!

A registry of those rookie cards? That's not a bad idea at all. I rather collect PSA 9's of those cards than every card of a certain player in PSA 9.

There is one problem with the registry, though, who decides what cards in or out? The 1986 Donruss Canseco and the 1983 Topps Traded Strawberry deserve to be on the list simply because they were for a long time very sought after cards, but have now fizzled. A case can be made. There is no arguing against having Boggs, Gwynn, McGwire, or Ripken on the list, but do we put the 1990 Leaf Kevin Maas on there for a being a very hot card when it first came out? Maybe it was not famous enough for a long enough time.
