Let me hear your balalaikas ringing out....

Here's a recent acquisition I think most of you will find charming! It's a Russian plaquette of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus. Castings such as this -- in the traditional Russian folk art style, reminiscent of similar wood carvings -- are known from around the early 17th century and were made until the second part of the 19th century; however, most of the time these later ones were made from original earlier plaques and the quality of the details is not very good. The quality of the details strongly suggest that it is a very early original cast, no later than the early 18th century.

Hmm. But where are the Fab Four on there?

    And is Paul barefooted?

Now I am probably 100% wrong , but that never stopped me before. John the Baptist baptised with water and the picture depicts a "laying on of Hands" which is the way Jesus baptised others. Interesting?? Very nice plaquetteimage
