From what I understand it's a coin or other objects made into something like a button. I think they use them in Rodeos. I had never heard of them either.
As I know them (Conchos) they are any kinda silver decoration. They are worn on saddles, holsters, vests, hats, etc... Southwestern sorta wear? The ones I'm used to are all round, although they may come in Octogon, or whatever...
