    Mmm. Pillar Type. Way cool.

Watched a fella dig a Pillar 1/2 real north of here, on a Revolutionary War-era shipyard site we were hunting (back when they were turning the whole area into a golf course). I dug my first large cent there- a Draped Bust. Unfortunately it was too corroded to read the date.

PS- it's KM#68, .903 fine silver, .0498 oz. ASW, and lists for $5.00 VG / $10.00 Fine / $22.00 VF /$55.00 EF, if that's what you wanted to know. I would call it a strong Fine to a low-end VF. Probably about an $18.00 coin, retail, as I see it. So you did just fine. If you wanna sell it and double your money, I would take it at $16.00.

Thanks for info and comedy everyone.
This piece also has a die clash from 4:00 to 6:00 on the obv.the V, m/o, and 1 are clearly visible (not to well in the scan). Also a die crack above the crown.
Lordmarcovan, Since I am only 2 months into my coin collecting hobby, I buy stuff that I like and am not looking to make profit, but if you'd like the piece for your collection (and not for sale on e-bay) you cam PM me and we can talk trade.
It's my first colonial piece(although my Washington funeral medal is lumped into that era).

    A minor correction - a 4 bit piece would be a 4 reale.

And phut - for $8 I'd say you did quite well image
    knowledge ........ share it

Well, knowledge is better acquired late than never Doug. image

For years I believed that it was the Reale that got chopped in eighths to make "bits", but I now read on p.3 of the Red Book about "The Spanish Milled Dollar valued at 8 reales . . . "

    Thanks for the lesson.image

I noticed that die-clashing. Something else to look for is an overdate. There was a 1768/6, so look at that eight under good magnification. The overdate is worth a little more than the regular variety ($6.00 VG / $12.00 Fine / $25.00 VF / $60.00 EF).

BTW, The prices I've quoted are from the Second Edition Krause (circa 1997).

I thought the 8 looked kind of funny. I believe it is an overdate. I'll look closer tonight.
Lordmarcovan...Thanks for all the info. I guess I'm in need of a book purchase.
The Red Book and a 1999 C4 sales mag. just don't quite cut it.

Sounds like you're ready for some Krause volumes. They're expensive, but worth every penny (or farthing, sheqel, pfennig, etc.) If you get used copies they ain't so bad.
