Overall , I am extremely happy with my grades !!!!!!! I submitted the best low pop commons that I had from my 1969 set hoping for all 8's ! I MUST OF REALLY MISSED SOMETHING on the #25 Roy White card........but the Psa 9 Ralph Houk made up for it ! They are listing it as a last name in white , but I thought I submitted a last name in yellow ! Will contact them to make sure as the yellow is really low in the pop reports if they are correct !.....Was hoping for all 8's , but I submitted some '64's that I knew would probably get a 7........requested NQ's on my submission ! Disappointed about the two 6's in the 1964's , as I thought nothing worse than a 7 on my submission ! ..........I want to mention that I bought six 1964 cards raw from Mickey's , advertised as nm/mt , submitted four of the six and recieved all Psa 8's ! Thanks Mickey ! ............Robby

Very nice submission... great to see a defintie consistency in the numbers... probably a combination of good selection on your part and fair grading on PSA's part... Well done!
  • Very nice job on the 1969 Tommy Tresh; that is one tough card! Congrats overall.

Very nice submission Robby ! One thing on the 6's....it's possible they may have been 8's with an OC or PD qualifier and your requesting NQ knocked them down to 6. Just a thought. Are you holding on to the '69's?

  • Robby,

Congrats on a very nice submission. I also recently got back a submission of 60's cards and was very pleased. But I went though them 3 times and only sent in the best of the best I had. I really eyed them up well on the 62's, 12 out of 13 got an 8. And I got a few lower pop 9's from 68. Check it out....

I thought there was a rule now in place that no 60s card could receive an 8...

    purelypsa;

I think that was a theorem offered forth by scottsusor... seems to have been proven wrong on these submissions.

  • My latest submission was great -- about 65% PSA 8's on 60's cards. Something apparently caused a PSA shift back to reasonability. I can't imagine what it was. But at any rate, I never had a "theory" that no 60's cards could get 8's so don't put words in my mouth. My only "observation" was that FEWER 60's cards were getting 8's -- at least for a while. Comprende?

congrats on your submission...I like the idea of just waiting until the cards show up in the mail and getting that pleasant surprise, but sometimes the temptation of checking via the internet is too much to overcome.

Nice submission Robby. You saved yourself a ton of money with those low pop '69s. It's smart that you checked on the Houk. They always mess up the white letter labeling.

Great submission--if those were the grades you were shooting for--

I stand by my experience that psa 9's in the mid to late 1960's are not being awarded as they were before mid 2003. If someone could pull pop reports from the registry, I suppose it would provide more evidence than this person's humble opinion. Anyone help on a vintage pop report?

  • Grillo - For my last few submissions, I also have waited until the cards arrived to look at the grades.

As I take them out of the boxes, I mentally re-grade them with the grade covered by my thumb and then see how close I was. The grades are still remarkably close and usually my grade was conservative.

Sometimes its very difficult not to peek, but I have found it well worth the fun and excitement of holding off for the three days that it takes to get to my mailbox. And there have been some nice surprises with the last few as well.

    Gradinator--
Thanks, but it's more than that. Check the % of 9's and 10's of ALL CARDS GRADED at (at least) two points in time--like July 2003 and today. From that one can see if there has been a statistically significant change over time. Still, it may not PROVE my theory, because more psa 7/8 quality cards could've been brought out by grading specials making it financially sensible to grade a card that MAY 8. However, cards that are 8/9 (my hunch) would be submitted regardless--thus any s.s. change may be a reflection of graders tightening up.

  • Fonz, that may be impossible since the pop report online is only the crrent pop and I don't think they haven't printed the pop report since 2000. The only way you can see this is if someone saved that info or printed it from 2003. Sorry I couldn't help better.

  • On 09/17/03, there were 44,016 cards graded in the 1969 set. The distribution of the grades was:

    PSA 7: 8,230, 18.70%
    PSA 8: 20,107, 45.68%
    PSA 9, 6,413, 14.57%
    PSA 10, 243, 0.55%

As of today, there have been 54,372 cards graded. That's an increase of 23.5% in 8 months which is probably enough to constitute a fair analysis. The current distribution is:

    PSA 7: 10,066, 18.51%
    PSA 8: 24,332, 44.75%
    PSA 9: 8,858, 16.29%
    PSA 10: 381, 0.70%

I know this is not 60's material, but here is a sampling of 1940 Play Ball, which is best served to look at 7/8 instead of 8/9....

These numbers are only straight grades, not including qualified cards, because centering measurements are not subjective, and these cards do not really suffer from any other prominent qualifiers, and there's no qualifier for toning.

    Inception to 08/04/02 - Total Graded: 3409

    PSA 7 - 996 = 29.2%
    PSA 8 - 702 = 20.6%
    PSA 9 - 17 = 0.5%
    PSA 10 - 1 = 0.03% (Ted Williams - collectors agree that this is not a deserving 10)

    08/04/02 to 01/18/03 - Graded in this interval: 353

    PSA 7 - 32 = 9.1%
    PSA 8 - 17 = 4.8%
    PSA 9 - 0 = 0.0%
    PSA 10 - 0 = 0.0%

    01/18/03 to 05/21/04 - Graded in this interval: 1260

    PSA 7 - 275 = 21.8%
    PSA 8 - 102 = 8.1%
    PSA 9 - 3 = 0.2% (1 DiMaggio & 2 Williams, which seems kinda screwy in my book)image
    PSA 10 - 0 = 0.0%

The percentage of 8's given out since 08/02 is SIGNIFICANTLY lower. Is it tougher standards or lack of NM/MT submittable raw cards? For this issue, I believe it is 65% standards, 35% lack of raw cards.

    Just my opinion.

    For '69's since 09/17/03......

    Total graded - 10,356

    PSA 7 - 1836 = 17.73%
    PSA 8 - 4225 = 40.80%
    PSA 9 - 2445 = 23.61%
    PSA 10 - 138 = 1.33%

Looks like 9's and 10's have become easier in the past 9 months.

Hmmm...As for 1969, congrats to those submitters--that looks like a nice increase in "money" cards. THANKS FOR THE DATA!

  • Does anybody know if at one time, a vintage card with 4 NM-MT corners (i.e. just the slightest touch) -- and no other defects -- got a grade of PSA 8 (NM-MT)? Today, per PSA's own written standards, such a card gets a 7 (NM). To me, that's weird, but in order to get an 8 now, a card must have at minimum 2 MINT corners. This could be the "tightening" that a lot of people are concerned about.

Everybody is not concerned about it. Didn't you get that cheese I sent to go with your whine?

Great submission Robby. LMK if the 1964 Linz PSA 8 is available.

Scott - cards with 4 touched corners have never gotten an 8. You've always had to have at least 2 mint corners to get one, at least in the three years I've been submitting.
  • Steve -- Thanks, that's good to know.

I've seen cards with 4 very light touches get 6s before.
