1913 Liberty Nickel sold for $3 million

I just read an article in today's Wall Street Journal that reports Blanchard has arranged for the sale of a 1913 Liberty Nickel for $3 million. (3'rd section, 1'st page) If they state which example it is I didn't catch that. They go on to say coins have done well the past 2 years. John Albanese was quoted and was said to have helped in the transaction. Mike Sherman of PCGS was also quoted. They have a bit of info about the 1913 Liberty Nickel including mentioning Max Mehl and the Hawaii Five-O show which featured it.

This site says it's the Olsen specimen. Got this from an earlier thread:

For some reason that link isn't working like I thought it would. Try the thread:

The Hawaii 5-O coin is the Olsen example. This is the 10 millionth coin NGC graded (formerly the 7 millionth that PCGS graded). TDN from these boards was the owner of it. Sounds like he made a healthy profit on it.

Wonder who the new owner is? I will need to update the pedigree.

those 1913 Lib's continue to be one of the better investment coins in the hobby. the only trick is getting up the purchase cash!!!

  • Ahh, the Olsen example. That article says the "Midwestern" buyer owns many coins and sold some to raise money for this one. And if TDN had a piece of this one perhaps he will be looking to spend the proceeds on some new coins?

That sale is like throwing a stone in a still pond and watching the waves ripple outward image

I thought this was Legend's baby .. maybe TDN is Legend's.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • From reading so many threads on these forums I think I remember that TDN (TradeDollarNut) partnered with Legend... But I didn't go searching past threads so I could have it wrong.
