Can you believe my luck with this "unsearched" box?

I bought a 1987 Donruss unsearched wax box for fun. 540 cards: No Bonds, no Maddux, no Palmeiro, no Ryan, no Rose, no Kevin Brown, in fact no card that rises above the level of common. With two exceptions, a McGwire and a Ripken that are both so severely miscut that they're ungradable. Inserted no doubt to make the buyer think maybe the box wasn't cherry-picked after all.

On the other hand, the incredible luck that blessed this box also managed to put 3 Tom Niedenfuers in one pack and 3 Kurt Stillwells in another. Talk about your rarities!

So we all have to learn the hard way who the right dealers are. If anybody wants to know who THIS dealer is (3,000+ feedback, 98.2% positive), I will share that in a PM. You don't want to send them your money.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say overtimecards.
  • Sorry to hear that. Hopefully god gets even with people like this and has them pull the Jason Kopano RC in their box of UD Exquisite. That's the only way I can make myself feel better about stuff like this.

Oh, and all of their GU or Auto in that box are of Wally Szcerbiak. LOL.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

It was a wonderful little group from West Berlin, NJ. I have had the misfortune of being their victim also, but with some GEM not-so 10 cards when I was less experienced. They at least gave me a refund but could not come through with the product.

This has to be right, jr?

West Berlin, NJ -- you nailed it. Though the auction listing said the item's location was Philadelphia, and the return address on the box said Illinois. Who knows which city the professional cherry-picker lives in?

By the way, same deal on a box of 85 Donruss that I bought along with the first. Only "money" card is a severely off-center Gwynn.

When they sent me badly graded cards I "googled" their address to find a phone number.
They were prompt in getting back to me but sent bad cards again that obviously were not 10s.

Finally they said "we cannot give you what you are looking for, so let's refund your money".

I would never buy from them again.

After I joined the boards I learned most people know of them - and I have no trouble giving the name.

startcollecting.com and other Ebay IDs associated with the same company.

That's who I got my 89 fleer wax box from. Only money card in there was a blacked out Billy Ripken. No Griffey, Bonds, Ripken, McGwire...Nothing. Dealer insisted he hadn't searched it. Lucky for me it was a $25 box or so.

I'm not sure what's more sad. The fact that you were ripped off or the fact that this "dealer" is so desparate for cash that they're searching '87 Donruss wax boxes. Talk about nickle and dime crooks.
  • jrdolanjrdolan Posts: 2,549 ✭✭
Not so nickle and dime, if they pulled a couple Bonds 10's out of it, or a couple Clemens out of the 85 box. But yeah, pretty small potatoes for someone to take the trouble to search the boxes and carefully reseal the packs. It's so blatant, too. Not to leave a single card of any value? Either they have somebody not very clever working their boxes, or they're buying them on the cheap, knowing they're plundered, and reselling for full market price.

The 98.2 is not good feedback. This means that almost 2% of the time someone is so unsatisfied they left a negative. Not a great ratio.

To take minor stars and cards from .50 to $1 is pretty pathetic. Their business must be really bad.

I'd like to know the name of this seller/dealer. Thanks!

The dealer has been named openly in this thread, by others who have had the same experience. Clue: West Berlin, NJ.
