No "plain 4" variety on 2004 Nickels Mint says

I was surprised to see this in this weeks Coin World. I'm sure someone around here can explain how the mistaken photo led to the mistaken assumption of the variety. I'll shut up now and wait for the official explaination from the expert!! My eyes are saying thank you, thank you....no more looking at fancy little 4's!!!

    Two theories have emerged from the E/V arena:

    1. The photo of the "plain 4" variety was from a proof coin and the mistaken assumption was made that it was from a business strike coin.

    2. The "plain 4" variety was a hoax from the beginning, the product of an imagination and Photoshop.

    To date none of the "plain 4" variety coins are known, and I'm not sure anyone knows of the origin of the photos.

    It was posted earlier that the plain 4 pic came from a silver eagle. I don't think so. I have seen the entire date showing the plain 4 and it looks exactly like the date on a dime, proof or otherwise. image
