1975 Kellogg's - Finally 100%

With the help of Tom Clark I finally snagged the elusive #1 Roy White and completed this set. It's the current #3 basic set. After years of K collecting, I've come to the conclusion that neither the 1971 or this 1975 set is the hardest - that prize goes to the 1979 set in my informed opinion. There are 4 complete 1971 sets (basic and master), 3 complete 1975's (basic and master), but only 2 complete 1979's. I realize that part of this may be simply a lack of interest in later year K's, but for me it is also as much a quality issue, because after busting out dozens of unopened boxes, and by watching the lack of material for sale, any way you measure it the 1979's, while not the most expensive set seems to be the toughest.

Thanks again TC!

Steve

  • Congrats on the set completion. Those last cards are always a pain.
As I am only a semi-addicted K-Kard guy for the registry (though I have raw sets, unopened 70 packs and uncut sheets to beat the band) could you share your insights a bit more into the '70 set. Certainly they are not to hard raw but I can honestly say, I have not scanned them for "slab-ables". So is the quality problem anything specific or limited to a few cards ?? Any of your thoughts would be welcome and congrats again.

  • Thanks everyone!

Fuzz, to tell the truth I'm not really an expert on the 1970 K set. While it is my favorite K set by far, it was also the easiest to complete by far, and thus provoked the least thought and frustration (in fact, I also found it a breeze to finish the 1971 set during the July-September 2002 time frame for whatever reason).

While the 1979's are far more plentiful raw than the 1971 and 1975's, for some reason they have aged far worse than any other K set. Two years ago Kruk Cards had a seemingly inexhaustible supply of unopened factory K boxes in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and I must have bought 50 to 60 of them. I have opened at least 15 1979 factory boxes and not a one of them was free of major toning and clouding problems. Maybe it was a problem with the process, or the paper and plastic stock that year, but this is the major problem with 1979's.

1979 K's also seem to be much more OC than others, and also have more of a problem with those little pinhole-sized dimples into the plastic - not a hole, but enough of a dimple to disqualify it as a grading candidate. Again, maybe the manufacturing process that year had problems.

While the 1971's are the known rarity of the series, I have actually come to the conclusion that 1971's are more plentiful raw than 1975's - a subject of a few threads this time last year. No one really knows what the problem with the 1975's happened to be. The problems with the 1979's really don't get much attention because only the serious K Krazies pay much attention to post-1976 K's, as most of the more casual collectors focus on the early sets.
  • Steve,
Thanks for the info. I had really meant to ask about the 79's not the 70's but was in a hurry and got the proverbial typo. Your info is very helpful. I believe they had small borders in 79 so o/c would make a lot of sense compared to the wider borders of the early 70's .
I remember a couple of years ago there was a giant auction lot of K-Kards in unopened form. If I recall it was hundreds of sets and mostly from the later years. I wonder if that is where the ones you mentioned came from and if there was a storage issue. I don't remember that being trouble on mine but I admit it has been a while since I looked. I strongly concur though with post 76 comment as I have often thought about starting slabbed sets but have a hard time justifying the expense of grading fees.
    Congrats again,
