Grade opinion please...

Hi, I am putting this 1632 Austrian Hall Taler up on Ebay a little later and wanted to know the opinion from the pro's as to the grade. This piece has the typical "waver" in the planchet from the roller press. It has some nice light color too. Anyway, if you could give me grades in both U.S. and European grading standards I would appreciate it. Thanks. S

    I would say US AU.

Wouldn't the EBay grade be "L@@K BRILLIANTLY TONED MAGNIFICENT LUSTEROUS SPECIMEN"image After all, it is a legitimate XF even though it may have occupied a bezel at some time in it's past.image

XF for US; appears to be too much flatness on the hair curls, staff, hands, etc. for an AU. Can't assess any rim anomalies from the pic.

By US standards it should be in the AU53 range with 55 being tops. Applying a tougher European standard, it probably is EF. It is an attractive coin and with a coin like this, grading should be not be as big of an issue because I don't think there is this big price swing for this date and issue. Best of luck with the auction...

As long as the color isn't the result of retoning after a harsh cleaning, I'd go with "Choice EF." Had it been harshly cleaned, I'd just stick with EF.

AU-53 if slabbed by PCGS or NGC.

  • Not an expert, so I won't try to grade that thaler.

Lloyd, I'm curious as to why you think the coin is scratched? What bothers me is the bright splotch to the right of the shield, but I don't think it's a scratch.image

  • By Scandinavian standards it would be a good VF (a very good one!) which would correspond to XF by US standards as far as I know. Neat coin you got there!

I would say XF-AU. I'm not familiar enough with the coinage of this period to really say if it might go better than Ch. XF, depending on how tolerant one should be of the minor defects. I don't know how much the little double-ding & small scratch in the field just to the right of his goatee would affect the grade given the standards of the day. It is exceptionally well-struck ... er, rolled.
