Ebay seller sportswax.com 1980 Topps Hockey wax

Hi everyone. I recently bought a 1980 Topps hockey waxbox from this user. It just arrived. I have opened two packs so far (I thought about eating the gum, but my desire for survival kicked in) first pack, Ray Bourque record breaker, off center, but in good shape. The second pack, Mike Gartner RC. the card pile was split in half and facing each other, so so far this looks like a legitimate waxbox. I will let eveyone know if I get any Gretzky's. I think all the waxbox buyers should get on here and tell their waxbox experiences so that we can find out who all the legitmate guys are and the resealers are.

avoid Overtimecards on ebay. i've heard some bad stories about him, from mudflap02 and others
  • Was overtime selling a whole bunch of 1980 opc hockey packs recently? The guy that was selling them has a bunch of negatives for resealing. One guy I have never really liked his personality, but from a source when I worked in a baseball card store is that he is very legit is the baseballcardkid.

    Third pack, Marcel Dionne.
  • 4th pack, Michel Goulet, Lanny McDonald Bill Baber.

Wow 5th pack Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky #250! Call it collector's clairvoyance, but I had the feeling Bossy was in this pack.
  • This is too weird. I had the feeling that the Bourque RC would be in the next pack I opened and there it is.

if you get a Mike Liut rook that's PSA 9-worthy, i know at least a few people who would be interested in it
  • I will let you know. I plan on submitting PSA 9 worthy cards to PSA, the rest I may just sell as a lot of keep them.
  • Billy Smith RB in the next pack

    next pack Mark Howe AS

next pack, ok, goal leaders card, rick vaive.

next one reggie leach tl, guy lafleur

Keep going. It's kind of like opening them myself. image
  • Thanks sagard. that's why I was kind of doing it, so others feel like they're a part of it. I was waiting to see if anyone tells me to shut up about it.
  • I'm not even a hockey collector (tho I'm having a blast watching the playoffs, as I always do) and it's been fun reading through this thread...

Like sagard said, it's like I'm opening them myself...

Post some scans when you get a chance!
  • Below is a scan of the wrapper and the 24 year old gum. Damn that gum should have been done with college by now. I'll post more scans of the cards in a few. Now pack to our show

The next pack blackhawks pin up poster, wow, this was a good pack, Barry Beck AS Mark Johnson rc, Charli Simmer AS Dionne AS 1 after the other, Ryan Walter, Peter McNab (met him once) Another Mike Gartner RC and Jean Ratelle
  • I don't get it, Topps does a 1980 card of Ratelle, but now Howe, or Hull. Amazing. Here's the next pack

Red Wings poster Phil Esposito TL Gilles Gilbert Borje Salming AS with a nasty gum stain, Marcel Dionne, very mint Anders Hedberg Tony Esposito (man these brothers are close. They're even in the same pack) Denis Potvin with a wax stain.

That Dionne looks like a 9 to me.
  • Now for the next pack Canucks poster wow same sequence as my earlier pack, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky. I might be able to make my money back grading the Gretzky's I've gotten.

Next pack whalers poster another Gilbert another slaming as billy Smith scores a goal, checklist Bobby Clarke (hate him) Borje Salming regular card

Next pack red wings poster ken morrow Rene Robert danny gare as steve shutt as pete mahovlich rejean houle

Baggy, I got a closer look at the Dionne and the lower left corner isn't perfect.
  • I'm running out of top loaders so the next 6 packs will have to be it for now.

Next pack North Stars poster PIM leaders GWG leaders Larry Robinson AS

Next pack Blues Poster Craig Ransey Daryl Sittler

Next pack Sabres poster Larry Robinson AS Phil Esposito TL Bernie Federko Doug Wilson Ric Mcleish Ulf Nilsson

Next pack Blues poster Daryl Sittler Dave Christian Ron wilson Rick McLeish Danny Gare Bob gainey

Next pack Blues poster shutout leaders

Next pack capitals poster Charlie Simmer RB, ANOTHER Gretzky
  • I would have to say that this guy is a good guy to buy wax from.
  • I just found 7 more packs of top laders so here we go

Next pack Black hawks poster Mike Bossy wax stain GWG leaders shut out leaders PIM leaders

Next pack NorthStars Poster Brad Park Mike liut off centerBarry Beck Bobby Clarke

Next pack capitals poster Simmer RB Gretzky RB gum stain off stain

So there you have it, 4 Gretzky 2nd years and 1 Bourque RC not bad.

Not bad at all, I opened a couple of those packs last weekend and got some good cards but not the biggies. I have a bunch more of them from fun bags that I bought. You know the packs from those are unsearched although I have gotten a lot of miscut 78-79 Topps hockey from them that were in 76-77 wrappers.

    Now collecting:
    Topps Heritage

    1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
    All Yaz Items 7+
    Various Red Sox
    Did I leave anything out?
  • I was worried this box was a search until I examined the seal at the back, and obviously realized it was not sealed when I pulled 4 Gretzkys
  • I have a 1984 Topps wax box that I will open soon. Do you guys want the play by play of each pack, or should I keep all that to myself. The 1984 Topps packs definitely are not searched because they are made of plastic. Why didn't Topps always do that, how many wax stains could have been prevented. They could have also given the gum a wrapper so it wouldn't stick to the cards.
  • If you find a Jim Craig rookie that looks like an 8 or 9, drop me a line - raydbonz@aol.com. Usually the centering is pretty bad.

The gum isn't really gum any more, it will just melt like sugar. Or so I've heard. Tastes pretty nasty too. (I just had to find out.)

I'll take a look at the pile of cards. Whatever looks like it has a chance of a 9 I will send out to PSA. I'm working on a set for myself and if there is an extra Craig, I will let you know.

I saw a reference to Overtime cards. Avoid him at all costs. he took me on a box of 78 baseball and all i got to show for my $300+ was a retaliatory negative feedback from Overtime.

  • Damn, that sucks Barkus. I was wonrried about this box the entire time until that first Gretzky popped up and breathed a sigh of relief. The best this to do when these guys search packs is definitely to leave negative feedback. Whenever I look for waxboxes, I check the sellers feedback. If there is one negative for searching, I do not bid. I then email them telling them I was just about to bid until I saw their feedback.
