Finally completed my 1964 Topps Hockey Tallboy set in PSA8(Nq)

I finally completed my 1964 Topps Tallboy set in all PSA8(NQ) or higher. I wanted to take the time to thank some people who helped me
along the way. I wanted to thank the following dealers who assisted me immensely in my search for high grade cards for my set. First and
foremost I want to thank the follwoing delaers for all their help. I want to thank Gerry and Jason Chartrand for all their help in providing me
with many great cards for my set. These guys are the best in the business and have had nothing but positive dealings with them. I also wanted
to thank Peter Lalos from Champs and Bums for the many cards he offered me for my set over the past year. I also wanted to take the time
and thank the following collectors for providing me with cards for my set. I wanted to thank Gary Hoft, Alan Cowart, Paul Lehr,, Dave Modelaine
and I also wanted to thank Mickey's Sportscards for all his help in selling me many cards for my set. Thanks alot guys for all your help over
the years.

I still have a few cards I have to submit to PSA with regards to my set. Once I have submitted everything I will be posting scans of my cards
for my 1964 Topps Hockey set. Good luck to everyone with their sets.

Regards

Theodore

    Theo,

Congratulations! What many don't realize is that many of these cards are pop 2 & pop 3 in PSA 8 grade. Theo is one of the most persistent collectors that I have ever dealt with. Please let us know what the last one or two cards were that you needed to finish it up.

    Regards,

    Alan
  • Hi Alan thank you for the kind words. The last few cards I needed to finally complete my set were the #105 Tim Horton All Star , #100 John
Bucyk, Earl Ingarfield. It was a long struggle to locate the last few cards for my set Alan. I also noticed you made great strides in your set
Alaen congratulations on the tremendous upgrade to your set and good luck on your journey of upgrading. It is a long process but once you
finally make it believe me when I say it is a rewardiing feeling and well worth the time and effort involved.

Wow, excellent set. I hadn't looked at those registry rankings in a while, and hadn't realized there were actually 3 complete sets now, yours obviously far and away the best. Any 60s hockey set is tough, and any "Tall Boy" set is tough, so I'm sure "Tall Boy hockey" is the toughest. Congratulations. Open that thing up soon.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Congrats Theo,

Truly a great accomplishment. I had a complete set years ago (although nowhere near as nice as yours) and I think I'm gonna have to start that set again.

Open it up so we can enjoy now that you've completed it.

    Great job.

    Tom
I collect Vintage Hockey cards in PSA 8 or better.
  • Thanks Tom for the kind words. I remember your set when it was on the registry way back and you had many of the difficult low pop cards. I
still have a few more cards to submit to psa. Once I get those cards back I will be exposing my set with scans for
the public to view. I hope everyone will enjoy looking at my set as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.

    Regards

    Theodore
  • Wow, that is one of the toughest sets in any sport to complete in 8 or better. I only have one card in the set, a PSA 9. It must have cost you a lot of Carver High School paychecks. Coolidge would be proud.
  • Hello gradinator thanks for the kind words. I would be interested in buying that PSa9 from you if you would be willing to sell it. I would offer
you top dollar on that card if you want. if you are interested in selling that psa9 please e-mail me at vasso@ca.inter.net
also please let me know which psa9 you have from this set. thank you.

    Regards

    Theodore

  • I know this makes me sound like a total fool as a few months ago I remember seeing that there are only about 22 9's in the entire set, but this is a dream that that will be the first 9 of a complete set in PSA 9. I paid a lot for it. If I remember correctly, I bought it from MintXpress for somewhere in the vicinity of $270, give or take $50.00.

Edited to add: It would kind of feel like asking me to sell off my left Pinky finger. Then it would be tougher for me to play the octaves on Bohemian Rhapsody on my piano. I don't play as much as I used to, but knowing pinky is there whenever I need him makes me feel good.
  • Hello again gradinator. If you let me know which psa9 you have I can make you a very attractive offer on the card. please let me know.

    thank you.

was it a NY Ranger, Jim Mikol or something? i think i remember bidding on that card and dropping out about $225
  • Gradinator if its the 1964 Topps #36 Jim Mikol Psa9(nq) you have I would offer you 600.00 for that card. Please let me know.

    regards

    Theodore
  • I don't know. I really don't think any offer would really get me to sell. You can try, but I doubt I will bite. I'm set #13 on the registry.
  • yes, it was that one. Damn $600. That is a very very intersting offer, but I can't do it. The toughest thing for me to do is sell or trade cards that are part of my permanent collection.
  • I honestly don't think I could even sell it for $1000.00 I know everyone is probably reading this and saying "what an idiot"

i hear ya on refusing to sell cards that are part of my personal collection. a '68 Plante PSA 8 recently closed on ebay for over $400. i bought mine for about $45. i pondered offering it to the underbidder at $350, but decided against it. probably a dumb move, but i just can't sell my collection.
  • I'm offering you 600.00 dollars for that card and it is a common. Its one thing I think if you were putting this set together but considering the
offer I'm making you on that card is a very substantial offer considering also you do not have to pay comissions to any auction house or e-bay
and you are getting an offer from the most serious collector on this set. I'm offering you top dollar on this card and can send you a moeny order
right away if you are in interested.

hey Theo, do you happen to have an extra Plante from the set in 6 or 7? let me know if you do, i would be interested
  • It may be a dumb move, but it may be a genius move. Maybe you will sell it in 3 years for $1000 and be glad you didn't jump the gun. By the way Will, you mentioned yesterday that your collection might be worth around $6000. I was thinking about my collection. It's possible just my C55 set is worth around there. I'm trying for the imperial tobacco hat trick, cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco, lol, but seriously, to get the c55/6/7 sets complete. I have the c56 and c55 complete (the c55 with both Smails) I'm waiting on some submissions to PSA to have them all graded. I'm also 8 cards away from the C57 to be complete ungraded. I just submitted all my ungraded C57's to PSA. I don't think they will grade all of them because some are in pretty bad shape. I hope to have all three sets complete, PSA graded, and #1 each on the registry. Sorry Yawie99. I hope to overtake you by this time next year.

I see it as the $600.00 will come an go, but I can always Keep the Mikol card. Granted it is a common, but it's my common and I think I would have lots of regret selling. I know it's unAmerican to not go for the money, but I just can't do it. maybe if you had some PSA 8 or 9 1954 Topps cards I need or any of the Imperial cards I would need, I would probably consider it, but call me crazy, I just can't sell it, even though I've hated the stRangers for 20 years now.
  • Hello Gradinator I sent you an e-mail with my offer. If you decide to sell down the road then please let me know. If not than please disregard
the e-mail and yourself a good day. thanks.

i'm still pondering the idea of doing a set an actual set. the C sets appeal to me, but i have too many other projects going to throw down several grand on a new one. a "type" set has always appealed to me, something like one card from every set from 1910-1989. i actually started a set like this, and got about 80% complete in PSA 8+ (for postwar 1951-89). then i got bored and traded away a bunch to Teemu for some Plantes.

if i ever get around to joining PSA, i'll probably submit my '55 Parkhurst set. i have about 2 and a half raw sets in ex

    Theo,

Congratulations on completing a very tough set.

I'm looking forward to seeing the scans when you get them up on the site.

    Best,
    Ray
  • Be prepared to be disappointed on the 55 Parkies when you submit them Will, they are a bit stricter on grading them and some people have done good jobs at coloring the corners. If you don't want to join, but want to submit them, you can always do it thru my PSA account. Let me know the numbers of all the cards, how many and I will fill out the form, then can send it to you. You ship out the cards with the payment and put on the form where to ship the cards tyour address.
  • Hi Raymond thank you for the kind words on my tallboy set. It has been a long difficult road. Once I have graded all my 64 Topps tallboy cards,
the last few that I have then I will provide scans of all my cards. Good luck on your Rookie collection.

    Regards

    Theodore
  • Alan,

I'm sure you do remember that one. Helped pay for a bunch of 54's at the time. (and yes, I had seller's remorse)

It's great to see hockey collectors chatting among these boards. When I joined, there weren't that many.

    Congratulations on the set!
  • Thank you for the kind words on my set. I am currently looking for any psa9's for my 1964 Topps hockey set. if anyone has any psa9(nq)
for sale please e-mail me at vasso@ca.inter.net

I will pay top dollar for any 1964 Topps Tallboy psa9(nq). Thanks again to everyone for the kind words on my set and good luck to everyone on
    their set building.

    Theo,

How's about coughing up some of those 8's in your second set to the lowly 3rd place set builder? I need ALL of them image

    Regards,

    Alan
  • At the very least cough up your extra 110 Glenn Hall A/S 8 to loaf23@aol.com . There will noone who will pay more
  • Hi Alan I would have really liked to offer those cards on my second set for sale but I have payed a substantial amount of money as you can
see from the price I payed for the 1964 Topps #110 Glen Hall All star PSA8(NQ) on e-bay and I payed quite a bit more for the other cards
in my second set. I would be willing to take a lose on those cards if someone had PSA9's to offer me for my 1st set. Also all those cards in my
second set are borderline PSA9's. They are probably the nicest known examples to be graded to date. Even if you were back in 1964 and had
the opportunity to open a few packs of 64 Topps Hockey you would be so lucky to get cards in this condition. Centering, edges, gloss,
registration is absolutely beautiful. I hope some of this info helped Alan. Thanks

Theo, do you happen to have an extra Jacques Plante in 6 or 7?
  • Hi Will sorry but I do not have a Plante in psa6 or 7. If I track one down I will be sure and drop you an e-mail.

Will, you really do love Plante, eh? image
  • What happened to Tom's #2 all time Tall boy set? He just added it in January and I see today its gone. I thought it was there a week ago? Anyone know when or why he deleted it?
I collect Vintage Hockey cards in PSA 8 or better.
  • Hi Teemu, I'm not sure why Tom deleted his set for the registry. He just posted it on January. I might drop him an e-mail and see whats
going on. Maybe he has decided to sell it as he had told me he was going to sell his psa7 Tallboyset once it was completed.

  • Hi Alan I do not have a scanne. I am working on getting a scanner so I can post some pics but believe me Alan when I say both you and I
would be so lucky to crack a 64 Topps wax pack and get cards in this condition. When I get a scanner I will put some pics up. Thanks.

me so mnay cards for my set. Good luck on all your sets in the future. I was just wondering Paul are you putting together any specific
