AT?

A member, whos name will not be mentioned, posted a quarter for sale that caught my eye. I am looking for a toned coin, so I was immediately interested since it is rainbow hued. I did not see him post on the forums, but supposeivly he knows LucyBob. I'm just afraid he's one of the poster who sign up and never post regularly, just rip people off on the BST forum.

The quarter on one side looks spotchy, and he said he's put them in 2x2 envolopes for 40+ years from someones estate. The other side of the quarter looks normal. Since the picture cannot be supported for some reason and I cannot post it, here is a link to the auction.

Thanks, and please note this is not to flame anyone just I'm interested in buying it, and the circumstances seem suspicious.

  • Perhaps the coin has been hazed ... or PVC damage. I really don't know.

    Here are the pics

    Front looks like NT

    Reverse looks cooked

Just my opinion but I am certainly no expert

Looks OK to me. Fairly typical for a toned quarter of this era.

Revised: Not typical, but not uncommon.

It looks like it was from a mint set. I think it should be okay.image
  • The seller was most likely reptuable, just I couldn't my point my finger to that strange hazy look. What's it from?

1957-P coin from the original double mint sets often have this blue pink color although the pink is brighter than I have seen. Looks like a pretty nice coin. mike image
  • What I usually do is compare the toning premium to the cost of the coin un-toned. I was amazed at the premium of natural toning. How much is this one worth not toned?

An average 1957 in 64-65 is only a few dollars but a niced toned coin is worth much more. mike image
  • I have never bought from Tom (although I have bid on several of his auctions and keep him in my favorites). However, I do know him from another forum (rcc) and I would trust him with no problems. I think he has a great eye.

I don't often disagree with Darktone, but this looks like envelope (Kraft) toning not mint set. I think it is NT. The reverse color scheme is the tip off.

I'm not a toning fan; but it looks OK to me also.

  • Natural, could be mint set or envelope, I'v seen these colors on both.

Just saw this thread....I only visit this board every now and then...yes, these auctions are mine. And yes, indeed, the coins were in paper 2x2 envelopes for many years. I'm speculating that the collector who owned these may have pulled them from mint sets back when the coins were new, but I don't know this for sure. But I can say without question that the toning is original.
