George "Sparky" Anderson

Did he just get inducted into the HOF? I was looking at early SMR's and it shows he is not a member, recently I looked at a newer SMR and it shows he is a member???

Thanks,
Jeff

  • So that is his first name. I can't see why the only manager to win a world series in both leagues no get in, unless baseball has a rule like football coaches, that you have to be retired before you get in and he may have only become eligable in the past couple of years.

Yes, Sparky Anderson is in the Hall Of Fame.
He went in as a Red Leg......a coupl e years ago.
Even though he actually managed Detroit longer.
But that is understandable........BIG RED MACHINE and all. image

The name "Sparky" alone should have disqualified him from membership.

So why is he not listed in the Post-War HOF Rookies registry? He does have one card, #338 in the 1959 set, and that should be in the registry unless he is excluded because his fame comes from managing.

I think he's in the '60 Leaf set as well (#125)

The "Post War HOF Rookies" set is for players only.
Sparky was elected as a manager.
He is in the HOF Managers Set.

I think he has a 1960 Topps card, too.

I don't think he's on the post-war HOF Registry because he was inducted as a non-player. For the same reasons, you don't see umpires like Al Barlick or Jocko Conlan on the Registry.

I have a nice run of Sparky Anderson cards. Gotta love those obscure Phillies who went on to have greatness elsewhere (e.g. Sparky Anderson as a manager, Fergie Jenkins, Ryne Sandberg, the list goes on and on!!)... I think I have 9s of all his playing day cards (not sure about the 1960 Topps - but I do have the Leaf and the '59 Rookie). Also have a pretty nice GAI 9.5 of the rookie card - I think it's the only GEM MINT example out there.

Sparky deserves to be in the Hall. Absolutely one of the best managers of all time. A very friendly guy, too!

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Watching Sparky in Detroit for 15 years was a thrill. The guy is great ambassador for the game. Alan Trammell is managing today because of the time Sparky spent with him as a player. I only wish that he went into the Hall as a Tiger...
