How does PSA crack holders?

I've read several good posts on how to crack a holder; a variety of suggestions including saws, knives, vices, and Dremel rotary tools. Anyone know how PSA opens other grading company holders? I doubt they use the hammer, chisel and flying slivers of plastic method like me.

Who knows how they are cracked at PSA??
I can tell you it is a very easy process regaurdless.
I can crack 9 out of 10 PSA slabs in approx. 30 seconds or less with a dremel and putty knife.
    It's a snap.
Took me a few to learn the easiest and quickest way, but once you get the hang of it you can do it in your sleep.

    Hey Mojo,

So I guess that means you still have a few hours of cracking left ... to get through all of those PSA 6's you got. image

If I had a band saw or some type of fine tooth table saw I would use that method to cut off the top of the holder. Maybe PSA does something like that.

Cracked a couple of GEM holders last week My first foray into breaking holders. It was surprisingly easy.

Punched a hole or three right on the flip with a hammer and small screwdriver, then broke off the top with a pair of channel locks. The halves came apart easily from there.

I'll bet other companies holders are harder to crack than GEM. The GEM holder goes with the grade. I have one GEM Elite Pristine 10 that actually has some paper loss on a back corner - some grading huh.

When I was there they put it on some sort of machine and it popped right open, in about a nanosecond. But this was a PSA holder, don't know if it was adjustable or not.
SGC's and PSA holders are so easy to open anyway, you could almost do it with your fingernails. Pro and Beckett are the tough ones.

  • Philly,

A band saw could be problematic because of its low speed. Use a table saw and it is very easy. Cut just below the ID card and then pop open with a screwdriver. I've done many PSAs, BGSs, SGCs and CSAs without a problem.
