After what happened with the buffalo bux, I'm not selling anything that isn't in my immediate possession. I nearly escaped a couple of nasty negatives over the Buffalo sets that I did not receive from the mint until August of 2001.
<< <i>i guess id better get ready for what happened 3 years ago... >>
Bill, I wasn't in the hobby like this 3 years ago....to what are you alluding? Since i have multiples, I am curious.
Also, Eric...I was wondering about that...you say you narrowly escaped some negs...when you sold before receiving from the Mint. What happened if you don't mind my asking? I saw quite a few people, incl a few board members, selling the Wildlife Medals WAYYYYY before they received them since the Mint kept moving the date.....Now, prices have gone much lower than they were and stabilized...makes me think I should have sold Ronnie's and netted him some better coins with it when the prices were high.....
I sold a Wildlife Duck in December that arrived from the mint in April. I do apprieciate the buyer for being so patient. And I see nothing wrong with this method as there is no deception.
Ron, I ordered the Buffalo two coin sets the day they were released for sale. I pre sold a couple on eBay in early June, and the mint did not deliver them until August. I sent a refund to one buyer, and I managed to get my hands on another set to send to the other buyer. It was a nasty experience, getting emails almost every day wanting to know where the coins were. Never again, I'm not selling my sets until I have them in hand.
When did the Buff go on sale? I remember that I didn't buy any because I was totally wrapped up in preparations for my wedding, but don't remember exactly when. I know I spent some of my wedding presents on buying a Buffalo dollar in the aftermarket, though. I was determined not to let that happen again, and I put in my order for the L&C sets. Whether or not I will actually receive what I have ordered remains to be seen.
Coins101...........Whoever highgradecoins is, he's a dealer as he charges CA sales tax for residents. He also has lowered the BIN price from $225 to $199.95. The bidding on other sets is now in the $140s.
wow - whoever sold for 129 lost $15 already. I wouldn't sell anything yet - seems they are going up already. I sure hope that I get my 'one', that says backordered also, but plan to keep for now ...... going to call them here in a little bit and find out if all is ok, since order still says problematic ........ already called once, and they said AOK.
What erics mentioned is what I was alluding to 3 years ago...the mint deliverd the sets almost 6-8 weeks later than palnned...coin world advertised the heck outta people supposedly scamming people on ebay with product they maynot recieve...immeadiately anyone with a standing order on ebay became very obnoxious to the point of demanding refunds, then when they see the product actually arrived and was reosted on ebay, they demanded the their right to the set after refund was issued...quite funny but quite the pain, and Im with eric on this, till they are deliverd, they shouldnt be posted. Supply and demand might negate otherwise, but sometimes its worth waiting.
The frenzy is on with the highest price for a set sold on ebay at $169.95: Link Many more have been listed, but how many will be delivered? The mint is notorious for cutting orders back with hot issues. At the end of selling yesterday they had a 10 set limit (I ordered 5). Those who ordered larger quantities may have gotten their shipment reduced without warning. They may now be preselling sets that they won't be receiving! Let the fun begin...
just called mint again - this time I was transferred to a sr. care rep., and then transferred to wash. dc customer care. I noticed they had debited my acct. on monday for partial order (excluding the $90 for c&c) (note order over 200). Was told last wk. that all was ok and thought order had shipped since they had debited acct.
Lo and behold, the money was back in acct. today and order has not shipped. I was told by main ofc. that they would "release" my order, and it would go out between now and 2 wks. - and that the "problem processing your order" would now go off the website, and all was aok (was told it was aok last wk.!!) (was told that I ordered more this time than I usually do, so that was 'different'. Said they were checking on internet fraud. (C and C still, of course back ordered to ship 6/10, I was told.)
I also inquired how I could purchase returned items, and was told by two ppl that I could not - that they were re-melted. Ha! You know the mint employees and/or friends/relatives will get them. Well, I guess there are perks in every job.
I ordered two C&C sets on line last week and am glad I did.
If you guys (and gals) hadn't talked about it being a possible sell out, I would have waited for the flyer the Mint sends out. Thanks everyone for being so current.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
My order placed on 12 May now reads "Your Order is in Process" so that's a relief. I ordered two sets on the 17th just to make sure. Those were "in Process" from the start.
I think the problem with orders over $200 is a new thing as I've had order amounts over $200 before with no "Problems".
I also inquired how I could purchase returned items, and was told by two ppl that I could not - that they were re-melted.
Heh, yeah right. Like that super-hot "Formation of the Union Set" I bought near the end of the issue. It looked like it had about 10 previous owners. I guess that one escaped the melting pot somehow?
I ordered 5 sets on the first day and as of today, they went from "problem" to "Your Order is in Process".
I ordered some more on the 17th and they still say "There is a Problem Processing Your Order ". I guess I have to wait another 7 days from the order date to see if i am going to get them.
This could be an interesting problem for the mint. If there is nothing special in these sets and people who ordered multiple sets start sending them back for refunds what WILL the mint do with them? If they start offering them again after announcing the sell out they will get blasted and have egg on their faces. If they over sold say 70,000 sets under the theory that some early receivers will return and they can ship to late buyers that will become obvious when some people are held in limbo for a LONG time and then cancelled after the # of returns trickles off. If they DO melt them and the melting it reported in next years Annual Mint Report (50,000 sets sold, 35,000 sets returned and destroyed net 15,000 sets) can you imagine the screams from those who had their orders returned?
This is purely my opinion, but I beleive the Mint purposely markets the Jeffersons as "Mint Set quality" to keep the stampede of orders at an orderly minimum. I may be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time but my guess is Matte Jeffersons and a Mint Set quality Sac.
Both times on the 97 Matte nickle and the 98 Kennedy Matte Half they surprised us.Nothing was mentioned in the brochure about the special finish on these either.I am waiting for it to arrive and have my fingers crossed !!! I ordered only one.I just confirmed that it is in process and due to ship June 1st.

I really hope the nickles and Sacs have a special finish and these pre sellers get burnt. Of course, how many sellers will actually deliver if they do?
What these guys preselling don't understand is eBay's non-performing seller policy, which works exactly like their non-paying bidder policy, three strikes and you're out. If three separate buyers file non-performing seller complaints on a seller, that seller is gone. I saw many of them get the boot over the Buffalo sets.
thats the question I wanted answerd, as I didnt see the mints marketing of previous matte finish material...so it was marketed as uncirculated?..could be interesting...maybe matte nickels and burnished sacs

No mention of matte finish or burnished finish in any of the previous C &C descriptions .Just said uncirculated finish and the mintages allowed.Nothing special about them was noted. Then when they arrived everybody got excited !!!

I've been following this guy's auctions just to watch (he put up an awful lot of auctions of this set.......) and noticed he has pulled A LOT (all the ones that hadn't ended) of these this past Friday. Maybe he realized that the Mint was going to give him 50-100 of them at once?

The Matte Jefferson nickel in the Botanical Gardens C&C set WAS announced ahead of time along with the 25,000 max mintage. Ticked off a lot of mint customers who buy by mail because it was sold out before they could even get order blanks either from the mint or the ones printed in the numismatic publications.

This seller has added 4 more and now has 10 up. IMO it's risky to sell something not in your possession.

That "remelted" story is the best one I've heard today!!!!!!
Just purchase mint products at the end of their cycle, and you'll probably get something that deserves to be returned.
I just checked the website again today too......I am now "Your order is in process"
Good.....now, I have my order and a few extra "just in case"
