What do you tell a dealer when you return a raw coin (from a mail list, sight unseen)?

I recently received a coin from a dealer I do a fair amount of business with. The coin's grade and price were listed on his sheet, and it seemed reasonable. I get the coin and it's a nice coin, but I feel it's a bit overgraded (and a few others whose opinions I respect agree with me). In this case, there is a bit of a price break between the two grades in question. When you return a coin like this, what do you write in your note to the dealer?

have him have it graded by a grading comapny you both agree upon, and pay sheet for said grade it comes back. If thats not agreeable, then maybe you can get a few grading opinions from 3-4 different dealers you both respect and grade falls in between the averages..if your asking how do you break the deal, its your opinion the grade isnt what it appears to him and can we talk?

Just keep it short and polite:

I recevied the xxx coin today and want to thank you for your quick shipment. Unfortunately, although I think it is a nice coin, I feel it is overgraded and I will be returning it for a refund.

    Hi Barry,
Write exactly what you wrote here. You are not satisifed as the coin itself is, in your and other peoples opinion overgraded. Keep it simple and to the point.

Pontiacinf - There's no problem returning the coin. Actually, I haven't paid anything yet, as it was sent on approval. All I need to do is send it back.

I know there's an unwritten rule never to discuss grade with a dealer, just discuss price. Obviously I think this coin is overpriced based on grade, so it will go back. I was just wondering how others word their return letter.

Barry, I think what to say when returning a coin can be largely dependent upon your relationship with that particular dealer.

If you know him well and get along fine, it should be ok to tell him you think it's over-graded and hence, not for you.

If you don't know him well, it's probably best just to say the coin's not for you or it's not quite what you were looking for, etc. Keep it short and polite (which I have no doubt you will) and hopefully all will be fine. If he then asks, what in particular made it not for you, break it to him gentlyimage

I've returned one here and there and I usually just enclose a short note that I would like one a tad nicer or something to that effect and I include enough money to cover their initial postage to me.

Send it back, blast the dealer by name on these boards, give him a Negative feedback and demand return shipping be refunded! Oh, wait, that's if you are having a bad day already. Well, are ya?

    Jeremy,
If I don't return it, I have to pay for it. A special deal just for you: 10% over my cost. OK? image
