For Fun, A Quick Comparison of 2 Cards

As a "prep" for the "World Series of Grading" -- Below are two scans. One is the image of a card currently on Ebay, being sold by DSLsports. The other is an image of a card I just got back from PSA. Which would you rather have? In your opinion, are one, both or neither truly PSA 7 material? Toppsgun, I hope this is an OK topic to post just for fun.

The second card definitely has much better centering.

The second card also has print marks in the pink section, so you are lucky you did not get a PD qualifier.

Bottom corners on the second card look bad while the corners on the first card appear sharp, but it is difficult to judge by scan.

scott...I realize you are just doing this for fun, but there is no way to spot all the minor imperfections via a scan...who's to say which is better. Obviously the second card is better-centered, but that doesn't mean it's the better card. Koby is right on the printing spots. I do know surface plays a large role in grading. In addition, you do not show the backs of the cards. The back is very important as well in determining a card's grade (centering, corners, surface, edges, etc, can look much different on the back than the front).

There is no way on "GODS GREEN EARTH" that I could ever submit a card like the DSL graded example and pull a PSA 7 with that kind of centering.

Those scans are too dissimilar to assess these cards accurately... but I think that DSL copy is definitely pushing the limit for an OC qualifier.
  • I know its difficult to do this with only scans. My card does have two very small white print dots in the pink area and one pink one in the bottom white border area. It appears that the DSL card also has two dots in the bottom white border area. Corner wise, I can't speak for the DSL card, but none of the 4 corners on my card are perfectly sharp -- all 4 are NM-MT (i.e. extremely tiny touch of wear but not at all "fuzzy"), looks more like they happened from poor cutting effect than handling. As for the backs, again I can't speak for the DSL card -- they didn't post a back scan. But my card's back is clean and well-centered with no defects.

  • What would have been more fun would be to post the scans with the grades covered up and not say whose card(s) they are. Let people guess. Anyone who nails it gets a free gift. Like maybe, oh, I don't know, how about a free DJ for a kid's birthday party?image

They both look like solid 7's with nice "8 or better" corners.

the first might be a psa 9 OC quality without qualifiers.

Exactly. That is what you cannot tell from the scan, though I admit, centering is very important on my cards. I would be inclined to chose yours, but who knows if the corners are as sharp, or if the print is as good as the DSL card?

This is like the before and after photos of a 'rather large lady'. Obviously the second looks better, but who knows upon closer 'in person' inspection. Scott, your 7 looks sweet on centering alone. Can I buy your scanner or at least sell me the settings.............

LOL! My scanner is pretty much standard stuff. Its an Epson Perfection 1670 model. I never changed the settings from what the defaults were that it came out of the box with.

Its completely reasonable to guess that the DSL card would have been a 9 (OC). But that would mean that all 4 corners are definitely mint and sharp. As others have pointed out, many cards come out of the pack with factory corners that aren't necessarily mint corners, at least according to PSA's definition of mint corners. With the cutting technology of the era, its a rare vintage card indeed that has 4 factory mint corners, even directly out of the pack.

I've heard that you can request "no qualifiers" on a PSA grade. In that case a 9 (oc) would actually have a 7 on it. Personal preference, which one you'd rather have in your collection.

    Why not? I can.

Yes, you can request no qualifiers, but a 9OC doesn't necessarily mean a straight 7. If it a mint card with centering 85/15, then it will be a straight 5. 9OC only automatically translates to a 7 in regards to the registry.
