" Miscuts" = Off Centered ????

Within the past year or so Vintage cards with excessive off-centering are now termed " Miscut" and thus returned.............ungraded!

Anyone have some insight as to the deal on this???

  • Just a guess, but if you're putting "No Qualifiers" on your submission, perhaps PSA feels that it cannot give the card a truly accurate grade without the (OC) qualifier, and therefore returns it as a miscut.

Miscuts are usually of two varieties...

The first is a card where you've almost completely lost one border due to centering - either front or back. Anything worse than 90-10 would qualify.

The second is if the card was miscut during the sheet cutting process and it is not perfectly rectangular. Occasionally, I'll get miscuts back and when I lay them up against another card - sure enough - I can see that its not cut correctly.

The good point is that this is one of the "non-grades" that will get you PSA credit for your next submission. A whole lot better than the dreaded "evidence of trimming"...

  • I see an awful lot of MC (miscut) qualifiers out there on vintage cards. Here is an example of a pretty nasty miscut on a 1952 Topps baseball card.

Is PSA not grading these anymore?

Okay, please help me learn something here. Is that Snider card (in Bill's post above) MC instead of OC because there appears to be no top border for comparison?

    OC (Off Center):
When the centering of the card falls below the minimum standard for that grade will be designated "OC." PSA determines centering by comparing the measurements of the borders from left to right and top to bottom. The centering is designated as the percent of difference at the most off-center part of the card. A 5% leeway is given to the front centering minimum standards for cards which grade NM 7 or better. For example, a card which meets all of the other requirements for PSA MINT 9 and measures 60/40 off-center on the front automatically meets the PSA front centering standards for MINT 9. If a card meets all of the other requirements for PSA MINT 9 and measures 65/35 off-center on the front, it may be deemed to meet the PSA front centering standards for MINT 9 if the eye appeal of the card is good.
    MC (Miscut):
): Cards with a factory miscut, such as a diamond cut, or when another card's image is on the original card will be designated "MC.

  • Yeah, I think that if part of the picture or printing actually runs off the edge of the card, it is miscut. Sometimes, you'll see the very edge next card on the sheet on a badly miscut card.

the miscut that gets returned ungraded is the card that is not rectangular as FB pointed out. the other miscut is due to centering being worse than 90-10 which will be graded with a qualifier.

miscuts can be awesome cards if it does not detract from the eye appeal . here is my favorite miscut card from my collection :

Is the MC on this card on the back? Is the trim cutting into the text on the back? The front looks spectacular with nice square corners.

keith , yup, the front is awesome , light rough cut without any notching , pack fresh gloss and razor corners. the back is cut right to the edge top to bottom leading to the miscut. I hear people complaining about qualifiers all the time but I personnally like them. It distinguishes cards like this that would otherwise not be graded or graded very low. I'll take a card that presents like this anyday over a lower grade or equal grade that might cost 10 times as much.image
