KC Tri-Star Show report

I attended the show on Saturday, and just retuned to my home in Lincoln, NE. I see a report of shows from time to time so thought I would offer my opinions on the show.

I have been to many KC Tri-stars in the past 7-8 years. This was one of the better ones. A good selection of old and new and a WHOLE lot of memorabillia type of displays. The newer products of Timeless Treasures and the other real high dollar pack cards (name any baseball product with 1/1 and 75+ pack prices) were in great supply and many dealers who had these present were dealing a fair number of them. Mark Prior, Pujols, and anything with Ruth, Cobb, Clemente, Gehirg, Williams, Musial, etc seemed to be good movers.

Nice autograph lineup while I was there. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, and yes Zardoz even Jose Canseco was in the house. Auto sales seemed to be brisk and I must admit Tri-star did an outstanding job of keeping it moving and keeping it all very oranginzed. I did not obtain any autos but was impressed with how this part of the show was handled.

My "dissapointing witness to a trade" of the day was a guy selling an SGC 50 Matthewson T205 to a dealer for $50. It had great eye appeal and minimal chipping, I personally thought it was undergraded. I did not have the stones to go back later on to the dealer and see what he was asking for it.

The vintage stuff was pretty slow. A lot of PSA graded material, but mostly stars of the 50's and 60's and a few Goudey Ruths. One dealer had a nice run of SGC 84 ish old judges, which were quite impressive. No older unopened packs save a handful of GAI graded packs. Did see a 71 topps cello GAI graded, Can't say I hav seen one of them before.

Since I collect primarily vintage golf, no report would be complete without what I went to the show to find. No additions to be had to my inventory from the 20's and 30's. There is one dealer from Michigan who comes about every other year to KC, if he isn't there, I really have no shot. I did "Pack the wallet heat" in order to fork out for a Bobby Jones US Caramel or Sport Kings (well at least one raw in vg-Ex shape....I do not have a budget to buy PSA 8's of either of those cards), but I was a little dissapointed in that with all the vintage stuff there, very few Sports Kings Period, and not a one US Caramel.

I was suprised to see a lot of newer golf cards. I did pick up a near complete set of SP Game used golf (minus 3 auto jerseys) for $300, (a great price) and two really nice examples of Sam Snead and Ben Hogan wheaties 1952 cards with the blue borders still intact. I am going to send these in to get graded.

I did talk to the guys at the GAI booth. They were both really nice and really busy. (I caught them on a taco bell break) They indicated this is one of the smaller shows they had done, but had already done 1000 pregrades by 3 pm on Saturday, and this was their best volume at a small show to date. I wish PSA would do an on site show in KC, as the on site service demand with GAI being there only charging $5 a card was obviously pretty strong.

If anyone has any specific questions let me know. I spent about 5 hours at the show and walked the floor multiple times. Thanks for reading!!!!

  • Thanks for the update, I was considering doing the show but heard that it wasn't one of the better Tristars, although I did hear some good reports. Maybe next year I'll take the trip out there for the show. Who knows, I hear they got some crazy little women there and I'm-a gonna', get me one!

I wanted to check out the show but had friends in from SoCal (non-collectors). Glad to hear it was a good show.
  • PSA used to do on-site grading in KC. I know it's been a few years though. I remember them being there in 2000. I had a table and was unfortunately set up next to another grading company (a real no name). Their machine they used to encapsulate the cards made a high-pitched squeal that I got to hear for 3 days. I feel sorry for the people who actually paid money to get their stuff graded through them.
