ebay feedback...

i have often wondered why sellers wait until the buyer posts feedback before they leave feedback of their own. as for me, i feel that the seller should be required to leave feedback upon timely receipt of funds, allowing for check clearance, since the buyer at that point has fulfilled their part of the transaction satisfactorily. what do you think?

So they can hold the buyer hostage and if said buyer posts a negative, they can retaliate in kind.

  • if i purchase a coin and pay for it and feedback is not given i don't leave any. i email seller and tell him i respect his wishes about not giving feedback. funny, i usually receive feedback very quickly. if not i will not give the seller any feedback.

If the seller doesn't allow returns, then I would agree.

If returns are allowed, then the buyer's end of the transaction isn't complete until he has received merchandise and found it acceptable, or accepted whatever other resolution is worked out between the two parties. So there is still plenty of room for the buyer to behave in a negative manner that would warrant noting on the feedback, and I think the seller should have this option open to them.

I, too, feel that once I've paid for a win (unless it's by personal check) I deserve feedback. It upsets me when I do not receive F/B, until after I have left F/B..... And, even then, sometimes not.

I often leave feedback for the buyer, right after receipt of good funds. What I notice though is that the buyers for the most part forget, or just done leave any for me. I will not write a buyer after a sale to solict it, but this may be a reason most sellers wait.

You are allowed to respond to any negetive feedback left for you so this response has no merit.

I left five feedbacks today for people who have purchased items from me. I sent the feedbacks, so they would know I received their payment. Hopefully, they will respond in kind. I have 100% positives for a rating of 199. People are funny though, and I can understand why some people wait to leave feedback, and a simple e-mail usually works.

  • As a seller, I won't post feedback until I know the buyer has received my package. Many buyers don't courtesy email the seller informing them that they have received a package. I'd rather wait to handle a delivery problem, not have to go back to post a negative against the seller or deal with a negative posted against me.

As a buyer, I post feedback when I email the sender about receipt.

Like the above responses, feedback is something done after the conclusion of the transaction. With the post office, UPS and Fedex in the middle, I don't feel safe until I know my shipment has arrived at the seller or I notify the seller their package has arrived.

  • That is my policy I put into place about 7 or 8 months ago for one reason. I had a guy that left me a bunch of neutral feedbacks for BU rolls of Lincolns. He said they broke in shipment. Do realize that were all in tubes, all taped closed and taped together, and then wrapped in bubble wrap then into a priority mailier again wrapped in crumpled newspaper. There is no way the rolls broke unless the post office drove over them. He even said the coins were great but the rolls broke apart in his feedback. Crazy thing is if he mailed me first I would have replaced all the rolls free of charge and let him keep the other ones as well just to keep the customer satisified. Unfortunately there are buyers out there that don't try to contact the seller to get an issued resolved, they would just prefer to leave feedback. Becuase of this I changed my policy to encourage people to contact me if they have problems. Since changing this I have never had any problems. I know it doesn't seem right but because of one bad situation many sellers have resorted to this.

When I buy, I post feedback when I receive the coin and am sure I want to keep it.
If I return it, I post feedback when I get my money refunded.
When I sell I wait for the buyer to post feedback so I know all is well with him, and that he is keeping the coin.
One jerk sent me an 1857-S Quarter with reengraved shields on both side, and wouldn't accept a return. I Neg'd him, and he responded with a sarcastic Positive.

Bad feedback has a far more devastating effect on a seller than it does on a buyer. As a buyer, have any of you posted positive feedback first and had the seller hit you with a negative? It has never happened to me, and I leave feedback as soon as I receive the item regardless of whether the seller has posted feedback or not. My main concern is getting what I paid for, not feedback.

As a seller, I used to post feedback first, until I was bombed last year to the point of buyers retracting bids. I wonder how many of you sellers supporting the seller leaves feedback first position would still have that position if you were bombed by seven negatives that were outright lies.

Here's a scenario for you. A buyer pays for an item with PayPal, you ship the item and leave positive feedback. Three weeks later, the buyer slams you with a negative and files a PayPal chargeback. Does this buyer still deserve a positive?

My position on feedback is I leave it after the buyer does, I can not afford to have my business destroyed. If the buyer gets in a hissy fit over feedback, even though they got what they paid for, then they can buy from someone else.

I generally feel the same way Russ. As a seller I leave feedback when payment is recieved. Some sellers though do have reasons at times for holding feedback. In the case of K6AZ, he had his account attacked by someone and he doesn't really have any other choice to hold feedback until the buyer leaves it first.

As a seller I have made it a practice to leave feedback immediately upon receipt of payment,

however many buyers either leave none or they complain about slow shipment forgetting that it takes a while for their money orders to get here and thus their items to them. Never had a negative like this

but I have had 2 unwarranted neutrals-one for slow shipment from a jack ass that paid by money order and had to be sent a payment reminder. It took 10 days for the money order to get here and

although I shipped immediately, from the time the auction ended to the time he received his item, took over two weeks and this guy has the nerve to write "Slow ship"! Gimme a break. Hello blocked bidder's list!

Second scenario, customer lives in the wilderness of Montana, pays promptly- I ship promptly. He writes 3 weeks later asking where his package is and informs me that right afer the auction he left for

about 10 days. Well, the USPS isn't supposed to leave registered insured mail just lying around. Guy starts griping about where his item is and demands a refund (paypal). To file a claim 30 days must first

lapse. I reimurse the guy out of my own pocket within 45 days of end of auction yet he complains instead of being thankful and leaves a neutral. Another idiot got introduced to the black-balled list!

Some people man-dumber than a bag of rocks! I think I'll start withholding feedback until I know for sure the item has been received which is why EVERYTHING that leaves out of here is insured!image

    I agree with K6AZ wholeheartedly.

Several years ago, I had one a$$hole buyer try to change the terms of one of my auctions AFTER he received the coin. Then he threatened me with negative feedback if I wouldn't comply with his wishes. Since I refused to give in to his blackmail attempts, he slammed me with my only negative. Since I had already posted positive feedback for him when I shipped the coin, I had no recourse. I was pissed. I told Ebay about it. Ebay did NOTHING. They wouldn't remove the negative from my rating.

As a result, I now follow this policy:

If I'm the buyer of an item, I leave positive feedback as soon as it arrives and is in the condition promised in the ad/photos... regardless if the seller has left feedback for me or not.

If I'm the seller of an item, I will only leave positive feedback when I ship the item if I've done business with the person before and know what kind of integrity the person has. Otherwise, I will only post positive feedback AFTER the buyer posts it for me. NO EXCEPTIONS.

What about the deal is not complete until the buyer is Satisfied!

Payment dosen't mean that the buyer is happy!

I should have also mentioned that I will leave feedback first for those I know, and this goes for board members too. But if I don't know a buyer and haven't done business with them previously, I will not leave feedback first.

You can respond, but you've still got a big, fat, ugly negative next to your name.

In the past few weeks alone, there have been stories here of sellers who left an immediate positive feedback, only to get an unreasonable request by the buyer, followed by negative feedback. I believe MadMarty was one of the sellers.

If the sellers had waited until the transaction was complete, this probably wouldn't have happened. And if it did, the sellers would at least be in a position to "return the favor," as well warn other sellers of the particular problem buyer.

I'm not a seller on eBay, but I can appreciate the position of sellers with regard to their feedback and reputation on eBay. I believe that there are many more dishonest buyers that would try to extort feedback in this situation than there are sellers who would, for some unknown, bizarre reason, alienate satisfied customers by leaving negative feedback in response to a customer's positive.

The seller can't rate the buyer until they know how the buyer will react when they receive the merchandise.

Will they lie and say the didn't get it?
Will they threaten negative feedback because not all the coins in the roll were not 69s?
Will they be a complete moron and complain about a non-existent problem?

  • As a seller I leave feedback the day I ship the item !!! i.e Paypal payed ships next day, cahiers check or money order ships day after receipt and personal or company checks ship 10 days after receipt !!!

As a buyer I leave feedback the day I receive and/or accept the item !!!

I have posted feedback for every item I have bought or sold. All feedbacks I have left have been positive with the exception of one neautral for a coin set I bought but never received (they did return my payment).
  • I both buy and sell on Ebay I and I do not leave feedback untill the other party does.
