Need help with British copper.

I'm thinking of trying to get this halfpenny slabbed. I'm wondering if the rims on the obv. will get a BB.

What's happened to the rims? I can see a bit of a sort of bevel - have they been filed or is it part of the minting?

Looks like a fairly strong coin to me.

If you are refering to the slight "chamfering", I don't see a problem. Here's the Nicholson piece for comparison. Notice here the denticles are very weak. I have a 1770 which also has very blunt-like rims and the coin is a solid MS65BN with maybe 20% red peeking through.

Lloyd, that's what I was unsure about. They didn't look filed but I didn't really see this on other coins I looked at.
I think it should be at least an EF because of the amount of lustre.

Mac, that's what I'm referring to. I only own one other British copper and the denticle are strong. Thanks for the
link. I think I'll submit it along with a few others to NGC.
  • This one I sent to anacs. It also has rounded rims on the obv. Came back MS62. So it shouldn't be a problem.

I will defer to the English copper experts here... but I will at least offer my thoughts. It should slab. I like the coin and it should slab in the AU range...perhaps as high as 55.

  • Spinaker, thanks for posting. Yours and Macs examples made me feel better about it.
I think I'm sending to ANACS though. I though NGC was a bit cheaper and there slabs

I agree with Coinkat and Ajaan on this one, no problem getting that coin into a slab and I think it will get either AU-53 or AU-55.

I have quite a number of NGC slabs in my Eagle album, they are tight, but they go in.

  • I've had a problem with the new larger size slabs. Have to be forced in and then the other coins didn't fit well.
