Could knowing the graders change your opinion of the grading service?

Suppose PCGS were your favorite grading company. If you met and really admired some graders from ANACS, do you think that this might influence you to submit more coins to ANACS?

I think that I'd be inclined to trust *graders* rather than a *grading service*, providing I knew and admired the graders. I think that if I knew the ANACS graders, and was impressed with their knowledge and experience, then ANACS might well become my service of choice (even though the market might price my coins at a lesser value).

If you agree that knowing the graders would make a difference, would it be a good idea for the grading services to encourage their graders to increase their visibility among the collecting community? Would it be in the services' interest to allow their graders to give lectures at coin shows, write articles, and maybe even spend some time traveling to various coin club meetings? Yes, these things would take up valuable time, but the new business that the services could drum up might make up for any time spent on the effort.

What do you think?

I think you're absolutely correct. I have met and talked to several of ANACS graders @ Long Beach. They're very helpful and have even give presubmission reviews of my coins and are willing to answer many questions. That alone has definitely affected my thoughts as to whether to submit coins to ANACS. A good portion of my collection resides in ANACS slabs.

I really think they are on-tier with PCGS and NGC in some respects and even better then the big two in other areas.

There may be concern that "knowing" the graders ( image ) might result in higher grades.

It's certainly affected me. I do give ANACS kudo's for their free opinions and information at the show. It's helped a bunch. And I agree with what FrattLaw said, ANACS has clearly moved up recently in the market place. The recent grading has been outstanding in Morgan dollars.

Of course knowing the graders will influence you. When I took the ANA grading class, I got to meet several NGC graders. And after several days listening to them and talking with them, I gained a new respect for their job.

I used to work upstairs from NGC back in Parsippany when they rented space from our company and most were under the age of 27. I did not know who they were back then but came to realize it once I started posting here. For a while, I thought, ok, what kind of experience could they really have at such a young age but since their move to Florida, I do not know what happened to most of the kids working there but when speaking to them, most stayed in NJ.

I would have been concerned back then about their grading skills due to their young ages but now, I assume they have expanded and the graders have more experience under their belt.
  • No but better grades would!!
