GSNA Show Report for Friday, May 14

As you may know, I decided to skip school for the GSNA show today--NJ's largest show scheduled once a year. I figured since I took 4 AP exams in the last two weeks, with my last this past Monday, I deserved a day out of school.

First things first, my car's tail light needs replacing. This is good because I got to take a better, faster car image

When I got to the show, I headed where I always head at the local shows... Tom Bush's table. We chatted for a while, and then I set out to look for some nice stuff. I ended up with a few raw toned moderns, a 1964 proof JFK that has nice mirrors and good frost (one hairline... should easily CAM), an endroll toned 1937 (D?) buffalo, a 1968 or '69 proof set with a DCAM JFK, a 1948 MS63 (super-old PCI) half dollar that is just about FBL that I need for a picture, and an album toned NGC 66 38-D with nearly full steps.

I then talked with Tom some more, and got a cool mottled Roosie in PCGS 66 with a good amount of royal blue... a color that you rarely see on dimes. Through the course of the day, I did a good amount of looking, and a lot of talking. Barry met up with us for a little bit and showed off an awesome 1918/7 SLQ. I also ended up with a 1970 proof set with a toned cent and frosty JFK... I hope I made Russ proud.

I finished the day off talking with a dealer who's got some spectacular toners... cases and boxes full of rainbow morgans. He's holding a few, and I'll be back tomorrow. I also saw an absolutely jaw-dropping Delaware commem in a fat-NGC MS65. Tom and I agree that it's an easy MS66*, with full tab toning, and astounding neon colors. The coin was being offered at 3x sheet for 66. I want that coin!!!

Now, about the show in general. Floor traffic was somewhat light today... dealers seemed to have a phenomenal day yesterday, with Tom Bush saying he sold much of his material yesterday. Tomorrow is expected to be heavier... my conclusion is today was a working day for most... tomorrow is the weekend.

When the show was over, I went out to dinner with Tom and his table-mate Bob Beels. Lots of good laughs (many of which at my expense) and an all-around fun time.

I can't wait to head back tomorrow.

Jeremy

PS- Pictures will come sometime eventually... I've got two projects due Monday that must come first image

Jeremy summed it up well. Was nice to meet up with Jeremy and TomB. Jeremy, sorry I didn't hang around longer, but I wanted to beat the traffic home (I still sat for a while on 202S.) and my wife wanted me to grill dinner tonight.

Dave, my guesstimate is about 80 dealers. I got there about 3:30, and the floor was pretty empty. Many dealers were not at their tables when I walked by. Everyone I talked with was friendly and chatty.

I had a nice chat with Steve Sabatino about my 18/7 SLQ. He graciously provided his grade opinion, and I graciously answered his questions about where I got it and what I paid. I felt it only fair. BTW, he was very down on PCGS and just about everything in his case was NGC. One exception was a 1918/7 PCGS XF40 FH SLQ. He had it labelled Pop 1 and explained to me that PCGS normally will only consider AU and better coins for FH designation. I'm not sure why the exception in this case.

The show sounds about the same size as last year. In that case, it's about the same size as the Parsippany show, but it usually attracts some bigger dealers. Was New World Rarities there?

I'll be there bright and early tomorrow, so I hope all the dealers will be too!

(I'll be sure to tease Tom about actually selling some coins at a coin show!)

Yup... they ran today's auction, which was apparently everything that didn't sell in White Plains. People around the bourse seemed less than impressed with the coins, and with the fact that NWR was in charge in general.

    Thanks, Jeremy.

In that case, I'm glad I didn't make a special effort to come today.

I called NWR a few weeks ago for an auction catalog, but never got one. Oh well.

Edited to add:I'll see you tomorrow - I have a toner that should make you and Tom laugh!

    Just got home.

Missed the show today as I picked up my daughter from College in Maryland. Passed Fleminjgton, NJ (near the show site at 7:30 am) on the way to Baltimore, Maryland.

Daughter was not all packed and took her 4 additional hours to finish up. Did not leave Baltimore until past 5 pm!

Now, I am too wound up to go to sleep and will be too tired to go to the show tomorrow.

If I had only known! I was in the Philly airport for about four hours today and then the Newark airport for four hours. I could have gone to the coin show!
