The NGC star designation is given for coins which NGC feels have extra/superior eye-appeal. Some mistakenly think it means "premium quality" for the assigned grade, but, that is not correct.
While I understand the star concept, I feel compelled to say that it makes no sense to me. I think that a buyer or seller of a coin can decide for themselves if a coin has exceptional eye appeal- that's part of the subjective nature of coin evaluation. It strikes me as the same idea as when people put a + behind the grade of a coin- just give me the perceived grade and I'll handle the rest!!
