Has anyone had problems/suspicions with this seller?

His ebay moniker is: avz369

I recently was bidding on this ebay item of his:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4130526207

As you can see, I bid pretty frequently to win this auction, but I lost out to ebay user: scientist1981

The weird thing is the seller, avc369, emails me after the auction has already ended and says in his first email to me:

Dear malepro,

hey, i noticed you're interest on the topps chrome rookie refractor set. if you still want it i can sell it to you for $400.00. + s/h. please let me know. thanks, joe

Thank you,
avz369

Then when I asked him what happened to the original buyer: scientist1981 - who not only won this auction and several others from avz369, but also received feedback rom the seller for this current auction! - the seller wrote to me:

well, I should have but the buyer said that he could not retract his bid because it was within 24 hours of the auctions end. let me know. thanks,

joe

What do you guys think? Am I being too anal or is this dude pulling a fast eddie on me?Ebay link

how much was your bid pushed up by scientists? if it was not much and u want the card then buy it, if however it pushed your bid to its max......well I'd pass then.
    Good for you.
  • Me thinks ye bin shilled thar laddie. These two ID's are a little too tight for comfort. image

Don't play into his hand. Walk away, there will be other auctions of these cards.

  • Well the thing is I was bidding up to try and find out what limit scientist1981 had bid on this auction. As you can see, I didn't reach the limit.
My only concern is buying away from the protection of ebay. It's not that safe, is it?

Stay away... walk away... run away!!! A fool and his money are soon parted.
  • It sounds like you were schilled. If you look at the bid history and take away scientist1981, then the item would have gone for $235 since chillininttown is the third highest bidder at $225, disounting scientist1981’s bids you would have had it for $225+$10. IMO, if a deal is trying to be struck it should go for this price to be fair. Again I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it looks like you were schilled BECAUSE the seller immediately emails you for a consulation price that is anything but fair. As far as protection goes, you are not covered by eBay since the deal is going outside of it. If you absolutely must have this card, pay via PayPal to be covered through them and your c/c company. Be careful.

You wouldn't happen to be from the St. Louis area would you MalePro?
  • Thanks for the input from everyone. Much appreciated. The scary thing about ebay is that you can't make assumptions based on a seller's feedback. Lesson learned.

  • this guy (scientist1981), has only 4 items coming up in his bid history (ebay search bidder) ... guess who the seller is for all 4 auctions

So this guy wins his own auctions by shilling up, then offers the item to a legitimate bidder for the shill price. I betcha with so many people catching onto his game, he'll be NARU soon.

  • If you think that's strange, look at this:

On April 12th, he sold this card for $719 and left positive feedback for an733.
    April 12 auction $719

and then on May 13th, sold the EXACT SAME CARD (take a look at the scans close up- 056 of 250) for $446 to scientist1981.
    May 13 auction $446

do you think we'll see it go up for auction again? I don't know what they're up to, but it's strange.

Also notice that an733 wins an auction from this seller and leaves positive feedback within 2 hours- talk about fast shipping.
Both of these people, an733 and scientist1981 along with the seller seem suspicious.

  • Here's a follow up to this guy: It's official, the guy is def. using a schiller to jack up his prices. He has relisted the item, but notice that the previous buyer - scientist1981 even left him feedback for the exact same auction!!! I can't stand dishonest people.

MP - hopefully you saved this joker's emails - send it all to eBay and let them do what they do - they can't wipe us free of dishonest people, but they can get rid of the stupid ones like this guy.

it is the same set. the member who won the auction his son bid on the item's and was not able to pay for them. we were able to clear everything up with out leaving any negative to each other.

This was the answer I received when I asked him:
"Since scientist1981 already won these items I am curious how they are being sold again. Is it a different set? If so what are the serial numbers for the two graded cards? Thanks."
