Goodriddance...Willards Chocolate

Here is a scan of the card you asked about from the 1924 Willards Chocolate Sports Champions set. I just got it back from PSA today.

    Tom,

oh! the Willard's set is a multisport set, correct? the ACC # is v122? i was thinking that it was a hockey only set. does it contain any other Canada Olympic players?

nice job on the c57. those are impossible to find in any grade, let alone high grade.

if you plan on selling them, let me know. i'm starting a type collection of pre-war cards; trying to get one card from every set from 1910-1941. just bought me first one a few days ago, a (PSA 6 quality) 1932 Sanella Margarine card for $1
  • V122 is correct. The set isn't listed in the hockey catalog. It's listed in the baseball catalog but only shows Ruth and Cobb because they were the only baseball players in the set. The description of the set says it's a Canadian issue consisting of mostly male and female Canadian athletes.

Thats about all I know. I would have to assume other hockey players that we see in the V145 sets as well as Paulin's and Dominion type sets would be included as well.

I have never seen a hockey card from this set on eBay or on a dealer site. They are indeed rare. PSA has only graded my card. I have seen the Ruth go to auction before and Shoeless Joe has the Cobb for sale in low grade (I believe SGC holdered).

Tom i looked at my Annual awhile ago and there are 4 hockey players, all members of the 1924 Canadian Olympic team. they book for $150-$200 each in exmt.

it is listed in the latest Annual under "1924 V22." it's listed alphabetically, and it's the first of the "V" sets catalogued.
  • who are the four hockey players?

Nice cards, Tom. (And nice new icon, Will.) I think Dunc Munro is one of the other hockey players, but I can't remember the others. I've never been able to find a checklist for the set online, but did find this pretty cool image on our own jmullen's vintage basketball website.

    V122 hockey:
    Harry Watson #43 $250
    Ernie Collett #45 $150
    Hooley Smith #47 $250
    Dunc Munro #52 $200
No such details will spoil my plans...

The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Hockey Cards, a Canadian Annual describes this set as follows:

    1923 Willard's Chocolates ACC V122

The 56 card multi-sport set features only four hockey players. The set was made in the United States
and inserted in Willard's sports nut bar. It is uncertain whether a Canadian version was produced.

    Photograph size: 1 3/8 " x 3 7/8 "

    Face: Black and White
    Back: Blank

    #43 Harry Watson
    #45 Ernie Collet
    #47 Hooley Smith
    #52 Dunc Munro

    Hope this helps..

Nah, I tried about a million different icons today before settling on this one of Morrissey - formerly of The Smiths, of course.

  • murcer,

But the backs are superb !!! image

I actually expected Gerard to get a 2 or even "Evid of Trimming". I think they've got me trained to expect disappointment image

The Watson deserved a solid 6 in my mind so I was happy with that result.

    Steve,

Great find on that Willards box cut-out or whatever that is? Is nice to see things you never have before.
