Barbers Practicing on Cards!

Check out this sad example of a 1941 Play Ball in a PRO 8 slab:

1941 Play Ball Bill Dickey

Seller says it's from his private collection! Whoa... guess he kept it too close to the scissors drawer! Sad... very sad.

  • I didn't think PRO graded anything below 9. Wow PRO 8 must be for really crappy trim jobs. image

I keep hoping to find some of the cards from my childhood in PRO slabs. I used to cut one guy's face off and put it on another guy. Rusty Staub's face looked pretty funny on Cleon Jones in the 1971 Topps series. I know these are certainly PRO 7s. It's just a matter of being patient.

Funny how the purveyors of PRO cards always seem to have low or hidden feedback scores, and lots of private auctions in their histories. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he bought this cut-up card in one of those private auctions, learned he'd been duped when he tried to cross over, and is now trying to recover his money. These PRO cards certainly make the rounds as collectors / investors learn things the hard way.

As a kid, when I was really bored, I would take a common and stick my pencil thru the middle of the card and twirl it like a pin wheel!

So, Scott - that's how you get a Pro 8!

No chance, he knows exactly what he's doing... take a look at his other wide selection of PRO razor specials up for auction. And every auction has a worthless PSA 8 or 9 card thrown in, so he can claim he mailed an unaltered card if there was ever a dispute.

You know, I can't figure out how PRO even comes up with their phony grades to begin with. Sliced up 8's, 9's and 10's all look the same, and here's a cut up Mantle from this guy that looks like they should have just stuck a 10 on it, but they marked it 7.5. Maybe they took off 2.5 because it was trimmed along all four edges instead of only one or two? Perhaps I've figured out their grading method after all... trim only one side and get a 9 or 10, trim 2 and it's an 8, trim 3 or 4 and you get the dreaded 7.5 NM+ grade.
  • What ebay needs to do here is ban all sales of pro graded cards. I'm sure ebay is well aware of this company. If they banned them, no one would go to Pro because they would not have a venue to sell them. Ebay should follow PSA's example the way PSA stopped grading Star basketball cards from the 1980's. The fakes looked too much like the real ones and it was hard to tell, so they stopped grading. I also feel that trimmed and other doctored cards should not be destroyed like some of you have said. There is a market for them. Some people with take a card in any condition, just to have it. I think what PSA should do for trimmed cards and others when they receive them is grade them but under the grade, say "trimmed" or whatever the doctoring was. I don't feel you are a criminal if you sell trimmed cards as long as you state it clearly that they are trimmed.

Most sellers of PRO, do not even list "PRO" in the auction title. They list it like..."1962 Mantle 8 PSA"
It gets your attenttion since it has all the proper words for the buyers searches on eBay. Then they promise you a worthless PSA card w/ the tranasaction. So it would be very hard for eBay to detect these PRO auctions.
The best way to stop PRO, is for people to stop bidding on the auctions alltogether...jay
  • That would be great, but the new bidders don't know. What they can do is people who look at the auctions and see that it is a pro (I've always considered pro to be more of a con) then report it to ebay and immediately end the auction. The seller gets one warning. Do it again, 30 day suspension, do it one more time, permanent suspension.

First, eBay doesn't do ANYTHING immediately, that I have ever heard of. I stiil haven't received a response on a fraud complaint filed more than 3 weeks ago.

Second, why should they ban PRO cards? It's not illegal to sell trimmed cards, it's not even illegal to sell trimmed cards that are not labeled trimmed cards. Unethical and you'll go straight to hell, sure, but not illegal. As far as eBay's concerned, a card is a card. PayPal feels the same way, I can tell you from experience. PayPal won't reverse the charge if anything at all was delivered to you. All PayPal will do is inform you that it's a "dispute over quality of goods received" and tell you to work it out with the seller. The seller will say, "Sorry, no returns on graded cards."

Third, despite the negative feedbacks, these bozos DO get a lot of positive ones too. These must be from people who either don't know their razor-sharp PRO 10 is indeed the product of a razor, or don't care. They got a good deal (compared to PSA prices) and they're happy. Until they try to make a profit on the card. And so the vicious circle of trimmed cards takes another turn...

    Nail on the head!
I do think the word is out to a considerable degree or there would be more of a response on this card than it is getting - almost 2 days of listing and NOT one bid.

This is another horrible area in the hobby. It's an easy way for disgusting people to prey on newcombers to the hobby. As it has been said, I don't think there's any legal way to stop the selling of Pro-slabbed cards. Ebay has set the bar for dodging responsibility. Their laissez-faire practices are shameful especially since they are so successful.

However, there's nothing stopping us from emailing bidders (Most are probably shills) and warning them. Also, with the high dollars at stake now, someone should start an internet baseball card page. This person should be a strict hobbyist, maybe retired with plenty of time and a huge amount of respect accorded by the community. We should all chip in to underwrite the thing. Also, it can be printed and given away at card shows. Examples scans can be saved and explained. This would be a huge step towards stopping PRO, card doctors, dishonest Ebay sellers, Ebay shipping rip-off basturds and misrepresenters of non-graded material.

I'm not doing it because I'm too good-looking and I still have a few years left of scoring with hot women. However, there must be someone here that has hung up their sex drive, retired and has the integrity it takes to protect idiots from themselves and buzzards.

It's just sickening to see these auctions. It tears at the hobby we love.

    or

We could just ignore it and eat those Pepperidge Farms Milano cookies. Man, those are good. All their cookies are good. And, did you see? The Gilette Mach 3 is being introduced with an electronic sonar vibration device to make your shave even closer. You can now shave and Hunt for Red October. I can't imagine improving on perfection. Look for healthy beer in the near future.
