Interesting Baseball Book

The local radio station had an interview with the author of a book titled "The Bases are Loaded and So am I". I didn't catch the whole interview but it sounded like an interesting book. The author is a long time baseball writer and wrote this book telling interesting sports stories. One story he mentioned in the interview was about Earl Weaver. He said Weaver was always concerned about players with strong faith because he was worried they would consider the reason they lost a game as "the lord's will" and it would take an edge off their competitiveness. Pat Kelly led the team's faithful in sermons. When Weaver expressed concern with their devotion to god, Kelly replied "don't you want me to walk with the lord?" to which Weaver replied, "I'd rather have you walk with the bases loaded."

He also wrote about the tenuous relationship between Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer over the years among other stories. It sounded like an interesting book with a lot of stories from inside the locker and press rooms. I think I'll check it out and thought some of you might be interested in it as well.

Gemint -- I like books, so thanks for this post.

I watched the 7th game of the '79 World Series on ESPN Classic a few nights ago. Interestly enough, Pat Kelly made the final out for the Orioles with no one on and two outs and the Pirates won the game 4-1 (and the World Series). I guess Weaver and all Orioles fans can now place the blame squarely on Pat Kelly and his faith for losing the World Series. image

LOL! I remember watching that series but don't remember too many of the details. Fortunately the Bucs won. Unfortunately they haven't done much since.
