I have a complete Peace dollar set. I am not aware of any PL Peace dollar. The PCGS price guide shows only business-strike MS's, plus one 1922 matte proof. Other than normal business strikes, here is what I am aware of that exists:
- 1921: Zerbe proofs (20-200) - 1921 matte proofs (??) - 1921 MS struck with proof dies (??) - 1922 matte proofs (??) - 1922 satin proofs (??)
I checked my Highfill reference, and couldn't find anything else.
I bought this a few moths ago. It`s graded MS63 and was described as semi - prooflike. As with dollardude, I`m not aware of any true PL`s in the Peace Dollar series.
Well this 1928 S Peace I am soaking in asetone...which seems to be working is revealing a proof like field and lots of luster coming through with no polishing marks or marks of anykind other than a couple of dings and appears to be a BU.
There were no proofs struck in 1928. John Highfill in his US Silver Dollar book does a couple of pages on proof-like Peace dollars. He states that he has seen a few 22-D, 25, 27-S, 34-D, 34-S proof-like dollars, he doesn't mention a 28-S though. Not impossible, just unlikely that it would get a PL designation from one of the big three TPGs. I have never see a PL designation on any TPG slab.
Keep soaking and take some pics to really show what the surfaces look like. I'd love to see them.
