Should I have them autograph it or not?

I had this as a reply in a previous thread, but i was looking for some answers, so I decided to highlight the subject.
Help me understand one thing. I thought getting an auto on a card decreases the value?? If I have an auto on a McGwire rookie and I send it in to regular PSA, will they deduct from the grade because of the auto? But if I send it into PSA/DNA and it is deemed authentic, I have a shot at a realistic grade?
I truly don't know the answer. So is it good to get an auto on a RC or not? If I have a gem mint Bowman Chrome Blalock, and the opportunity to have him sign it, is it worth more now? That would be a great card, huh? Kinda like a "unofficial" Pujols from the same set!

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

There is a new set coming out in july or august. I forget the name of it i will post it later. but it is topps and it has an encased buy back auto card of a list of players. Willie mays is on that list they auto a certain number of cards from every year and they # there rookie card auto 1 of 1! so maybe this set will help getting your auto cards graded better value. Just a thought. That willie mays encased rc auto 1 of 1 should sell for 25k i think.

I don't know how others view this subject, but I do know that PSA doesn't necessarily deduct grade points solely for an autograph on the card.
For example, I have an autographed Tony Gwynn 1983 Topps rookie card that is PSA/DNA certified, and also graded PSA 9! I don't know if PSA would grade an autographed card as a 10 or not. Personally, I can't see an autographed card as a 10, since I personally wouldn't consider it "Gem" mint.
The autographed Gwynn cost me double what my regular PSA 9 Gwynn Topps rookie cost, both purchased on ebay.
I would guess that the long-standing views are probably still true, those being that for "card collectors", an autograph on a card deducts value, but for those collectors who are "fans" of a particular player or team, an autographed card, especially if it is an 8 or better, would be worth more to them.

That Topps set sounds great. I am attempting an autographed Type set and need auto's from; 1954, 1955, 1967, & 1971.

I have thought about this many times especially where the card can be worth way more than the autograph - e.g. I have a really nice 53T #228 Newhouser auto - the card is worth way more than the sig. I agree with SDSports on his general take on the topic.
I did shoot out a few emails to see what official take I get from PSA and krause - if I get anything different or enlightening, I will post it.
