Minor League Baseball Cards

I was reading this post..
Which cards do you recommend for good investments?
and Spigrimace's recommendations which including several minor league issues. This reminded me of a number of minor league sets I bought back in the 80's and how little interest there appears to be in minor league sets in general (correct me if I'm wrong). I will confess my ignorance as I have not really gotten back into the hobby until the last year or so, but was there a lot of reproduction or counterfeiting of these cards going on? PSA grades these issues (and prices a few) so I was curious how prevelant this really was.
Most of these sets were produced in the thousands, rather than hundreds of thousands or more for the big league issues, thus providing a really limited production run on most of the pre 90's sets (don't know about any from the 90's). These will contain the first cards of most future HOFers from that era also. From what I remember, Beckett use to publish a pretty comprehensive minor league baseball price guide, but I have not recently been able to find anything from Beckett that carries many of the sets prior to the 90's.
Also, I remember 1988 Ballpark Cape Cod league prospects being a pretty hot set for a while but it does not even appear on the SMR (only the full Cape Cod league run from P&L does). Pretty limited run compared to the P&L set from what I remember and has Bagwell and Thomas.
I think I've talked myself into picking up some additional sets.
