No one collecting '70 Topps?

What's going on with this set? Has everyone either 1) completed or 2) stopped collecting this issue? I have several nice 8's up for auction and not only am I not getting bids, I'm not even getting hits. I thought this was once a popular project? '68s too?

70 Topps is not one that I would ever call a popular project. Its had its fans, but to be honest - I think that we are few and far between. Chris Renaud has done a great job with it - but of course he's now finished except for the occasional upgrade. The Cryer set is still picking up some upgrades and Brian Long (PSUINNYC) has been buying PSA 9's like candy over the last year or so - so I suspect he's near finishing. Mark Wagner is within 1% of finishing and then me and John DiCicco are within 8% and 6% respectively of completing this thing as well - so we're not going to be much help.

But, there don't seem to be a ton of people climbing on board.

This is one of the real problems that I see with the registry - we don't have new blood continually joining. I would be that most new sets started are by members who already have other sets going.

    Just my 2 cents.

i have a very nice nm to mint raw set. i recently tested the waters and had some of them graded. i sampled 10 of the best cards and not one 9 ....i actually thought at least one of them had a legit shot at a 10. i traded some of them to AUGUSTAMAN for some 71's. the set will stay raw for a long time.
normally i would try and submit for nines and tens to make some grading cash but the market for 9's is weak and with the seemingly tough PSA standards lately it just seems like a lose , lose situation.

"with the seemingly tough PSA standards lately it just seems like a lose , lose situation."

That is not a good thing.

1970 Topps always struck me as a very bland set. Gray borders, yellow backs and no big rookies. It just looks dead (or at least very, very sick). My cousin's got a ton of them and once promised them to me, but I don't even want to bring it up.

I had about 15 raw 1970 cards in really nice condition. (I compaired them to my 7 graded cards as far as what grade they might recieve) Anyways I decided not to submit them but get rid of them at the Boston Shriner Show last november. Not one dealer was interested. My Reggie Jackson only got a fair offer (the rest were minor stars) Almost every dealer told me that it is considered a very unpopular set. Just figured I would throw this in.

I have a friend that is collecting the set.He is on the registry but just had a baby(his wife) and has slowed up on his collecting.I will give him a "heads up". I do think that as most have stated already,it is a bland set and does not have much appeal.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • Over the last month or so several collectors have been picking up 1970 Topps Commons PSA 9's for $10.00 - $20.00 and PSA 8's for $4.00 and $6.00. At these realized prices it doesn't make for a good seller market, because raw 1970's + grading will cost you more than can be gotten from the market.

The only exception being star/key cards, they still get some attention even in PSA 7, but no ground breaking prices being realized.

I starting to see this as a trend in a lot of other baseball card areas, not a lot of bidding going on, of course their are the 53 Bowman color exceptions. Here are a few examples:

1970 Topps Commons PSA 9 consistantly going for under $20 (some aberations in low pops)
1972 Topps Commons PSA 9 consistantly going for under $24 (again the aberations are in low pops)
1977 Topps Cloth Stickers Nolan Ryan PSA 9 expected to go over $110 ( went for $72)
1980 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 10 expected to go over $950 ( went for $800)
1982 Kelloggs Nolan Ryan PSA 10 expected to go over $100 ( I won for $49)
PSA 10's of late 80's and 90's stuff that a year ago would go over $100 ( can be had $35-60)

My take on it is there are a lot less bidders out there then a year ago, and with the reduced competion prices drop because collectors either already have the card or are doing their own submitting and are not buying on Ebay.

    Just some observations,

This set is pretty much dead. I've handled several over the years and lately they're about as down as they've ever been. I picked up a nice set in the previous Mastro auction mainly for the Bench A/S. I graded out some with the intent of breaking the set up but they mostly aren't even getting back the grading fee. I'll probably end up turning the set over again and will probably lose my shorts on it. Never again will I break a 1970 set. I think many others will come to the same conclusion. Eventually the supply will dwindle and the demand will slowly increase. Eventually the two will even out.

I do plan to eventually grade out my personal set but it isn't my highest priority.
  • It seems that there is not as much buying as there was just a short time ago. Maybe the summer is diverting peoples funds else ware. Maybe more people are waiting for 9's and passing on the 8's.

I for one will take any and all 9's (that i need) from 1970. I also have to admit I have been distracted with another set right now.

Is anyone finding it tough to find 8's for a specific year?

That kinda weird how people tastes vary because I think the 1970 set looks really nice. I've never really attemped to put together a vintage set but now might be a good time to start if nobody else is buying them. I think they look better than most years in that era.
  • I agree that it's not the best looking set, but for me it brings back memories of collecting as a kid. A complete set is one of my goals. Straight PSA 8 or nm-mt raw. Completing sets of 700+ cards takes patience.
  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! It's my favorite baseball set and I like the design and love the pictures!
If it's worth doing..It's worth overdoing!!
