Submission results: sick to my stomach, plz read, affects all.

When I receive a lower than expected grade on a card or two I chalk it up to a flaw that I missed. When most on the submission are lower than expected, there's possibly something wrong.

I submitted many times before: usually a few disappointments, a few surprises.
I use a 10x loupe.
I give the grader the benefit of the doubt, they'll occasionally miss.
I'm aware of what a 3/4/5 looks like, if it's even questionable for a 6, I won't submit

My recent submission results:

1965 OPC Morgan - 6 (expect 7/8)
1966 OPC Rose - 7 (7)
1966 OPC Yaz - 7 (7)
1966 OPC Koufax - 6 (7)
1966 OPC Banks - 5 (7)
1968 OPC Mays - 6 (7/8)
1968 OPC Perry - 8 (8/9)
1968 OPC Gibson - 7 (7)
1968 OPC Sutton - 3 (7/8)
1968 OPC Aaron - 5 (7/8)
1968 OPC Yaz CL - 6 (6)
1970 OPC Ryan #197 - 6 (7)
1970 OPC Brock SGC no MB - 7 (8)
1971 OPC Yaz - 7 (8/9)
1974 OPC Aaron - 4 (8/9)
1974 OPC Schmidt - 6 (7/8)
1974 OPC Jackson 7, another a 6 (8,8)
1974 OPC Winfield - 5 (8)
1974 OPC Rose - 6 (8/9)
1975 OPC Ryan HL - 7 (7/8)
1975 OPC Yount - 7 (7)
1975 OPC Brett - 7, another a 6 (8,7)
1975 OPC Carter - 7 (8)
1971 Topps Perez - 7 (8/9)
1974 Topps Munson - 8 (8/9)
1976 OPC Aaron #1 - 6 (8)
1967 Venezuelan Yaz - 6 (6/7)

FOUR SGC crossover requests to equal grade - all denied! 84,84,88 and 88

I'm usually about 75% correct in gauging the grade before I send. This time I was 75% WRONG.

Someone called me quite irritated and upset when they received my package because I made a mistake regarding the invoice. Was this retribution? Did they play kick ball with the package? Was the grader not OPC savvy regarding thin stock, rough cuts?

I don't pay much attention when someone complains about a bad grade, I will usually defend PSA. However, I've read too many posts lately by experienced collectors with loupes that are very dissatisfied with their grades.

Thoughts? I have not once complained about a grade on the board or to PSA.

    Where's the consistency!!!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Doesn't look like you caught a single break there... can't believe a 3 on a card you thought would grade 7/8... someone probably graded these thinking they were Topps cards and nailed you on the rough cuts... just a guess.

Looks like you got a lotta crackin' to do... better luck next time!
  • That is the problem . There is no consistency! I cracked out 2 -1959 topps commons that were graded 7s and I knew one was a nine and the other was an 8. One was very low pop the other high pop. They come back one 6 and one 8. You guessed it the low pop came back a 6! The high pop came back an 8. And this is on vintage commons. One should not have to resubmit. A customer has got to be satisfied as with any other business. Money should not be made on resubmissions. I hope this problem is addressed soon

    problem addressed already:

    1. grading is subjective
    2. everybody makes mistakes
    3. shipping, even when self-insured is another way to profit off "the paying membership masses"
    4. turnaround times are subject to various shifting calenders and agendas, lame excuses and outright "attitude" from customer service.
    5. WIWAG never happened.
  • Have to agree with the resubmitted comment that it should not happen but that is business great company they have when you can create revenue by counting on resubmissions. Another crock is that they take the full amount on rejected cards. What a joke that is thought only governments could do that guess not.

maybe it is not a bad thing that my orders are 39 days old on bulk service. at least disappointment and frustration hasn't sent in and I haven't wasted my money yet. I would guess that there is a wrinkle or a bend on the cards graded 3-5. the rest I can't explain and won't try to but since you collect opc and know how opc cards usually get graded , this invoice does not make much sense.

I would be interested in the koufax if it is for sale and would lve to see scans when they get back

    67standup,

Sorry about the results. For clarification, do you mean that the submission results affect all or the fact that you're sick to your stomach affects all?

Everyone on the board has probably had that same experience...I know that I have. At the National, I sat with EJGURU and we previewed quite a few cards before submitting them. There were a bunch that we didn't agree on ... and some of them came back as 9's!! On the one's we disagreed on...he was right about 75-80% of the time. Nonetheless, I still think that both he and PSA are wrong.

After years of submitting, I have concluded that the grades on the cards are ONE persons opinion at a single moment in time. For $8-$10/ grade, I don't see how the economics work otherwise.

    Regards,

    Alan
  • To add to Mucerfan's list:

    6) PRO shamelessly slabs trimmed cards

    7) Shady sellers profit thanx to private auctions and feedback.

    8) BOTN and MW are gasbags

    9) Mastronet employs poets

Not to make light of 67Standup's problem. I feel your pain. Nothing's worse than opening that taped up box from Newport Beach, only to realize moments later half of them will require the crack and resubmit process all over again.
My vintage submission awaits while I cross my fingers. (I hope mine are graded on Friday afternoon when the grader has a date with a hottie that night)
  • Thanks everyone for you responses, seems as if everyone has been there. As mentioned, there's usually a card or two that causes disappointment, but not 75% of an order! It's just the first time it's happened to me after numerous submissions to SGC and PSA. I just think that when a whole order goes bad, it is definitely a matter of subjectivity on the grader. To earn a PSA 3,4 or 5 the flaw is probably apperent with the naked eye...I used a loupe!

    did you request no qualifiers?
  • I’d gladly offer you the ’66 OPC Koufax, but I need it for my set. I did not specify no qualifiers as I don’t submit cards which are borderline OC or stain. Therefore, I usually don’t receive too many return grades with qualifiers. However, I don’t submit cards that I think are PSA 6, but we all know how that theory turned out.

Between the $4000 snipe during the last ten seconds of the Orioles Jackson auction and this little experience, it’s not been a good hobby week.

  • On your PSA 3 Sutton, did you find the crease yet? It must be something major like that, or perhaps a chipped border.

there must be a wrinkle or something on the 3. I was thinking if the back was miscut and you requested no qualifiers then that could be the cause but not happening. please post scans or findings when you get the cards back

by the way what was the orioles jackson snipe?

If you tell Customer Service in a very polite way that you feel some cards were undergraded, they will politely reply that they are more than happy to give them a second look ... for another $10 per card. I guess that means a CAREFUL examination costs $20 and double shipping fees.

And as somebody keeps saying, it's all subjective and a matter of luck as to which grader you get and what his mood is that day. Somehow, we keep trying all the same, because we really do want that PSA 8 or 9 for our set!
  • PSA 8 or PSA 9? I'm still trying to get the ultimate rare PSA card, the PSA 9 OC ST MC MK PD OF card. I want to see if it fits on one flip. So far I've only be able to garner one qualifier on a card.

67Standup, I sorry to hear about your disappointment in the results of your submission. If you have your cards back, verify that they still look the same, its possible that at some point along the line they were damaged and that is the cause of the lower grades.
