Like a fool I typed out a statement proclaiming someone as an "idiot" for spending 7k on a psa (8) 53 bowman color Tobey Atwell card #112.
First off, I would like to say that the person (Chris) showed a lot of class with his response to my IDIOTIC statement and excepted my apologie. Thank You Chris
What I am questioning is the smr magazine and how much I should really refer to as a guide. For example I spent $1000.oo on the 53 color Reese #33 psa 7 which listed at $915.oo in that grade. When I look up card # 112 it is not listed, commons #1 through # 112 in grade 8 price out at $140.00. I want to know if the pop report is better to refer to when buying cards than just the smr, and also are some commons so expensive because most people did not keep these cards because of the fact that they are unknown players? Another example is a 1954 Topps # 101 Gene Woodling that I have in psa 6 that lists for $20.00 but I have seen a 7 selling for $500.00 (smr $65.00). What is the deal.
I have rambled on enough here but I would appreciate some input as I am new to the registry and the hobby.
Thank You
Paul

Welcome to the boards and that was nice to apologize to Chris(the big dog) Renaurd. It takes some stones to get on here and express your opinion, much less eat crow. I don't know Chris however I am sure no hard feelings.
As for the SMR it serves as a guide and that is it. The best way to know the value of cards is at your finger tips with EBay. I track the sales of all the sets that I collect. I make a spread sheet that I refer to and I hardly ever use the SMR. I think PSA is too busy to really follow the market. Nothing against the company that I love, but let's face it PSA does not have a person that monitors this area. Until they spend some $$$ for that position it will always be known as an informational guide instead of a price guide.

Only classy people apologize for wrongdoings.
So you are a very classy person.

<< <i>PSA would need a staff of hundreds to keep track of the thousands of vintage common cards and their actual values. >>
Good points in general - but I'd guess that a staff of less than 10 could fulfill this function if PSA ever deemed it important enough. A few top-notch programmers (to scrape pricing info from various sites) and a few data analysts is all it would take ...
