Speaking of ARCO regional issues, have any of you seen this before?

I remember several people chatting recently about ARCO's Noah's Arc issues from the '70's. Does anyone who lived in the Pittsburgh area in 1971 remember this:

These were 8x10 glossy's with stats and bios on the back. There were 12 Pirate players issued that year including Maz and Stargell. They are really nice items.

    Dude,

That's nice. I got the Larry Bowa, Tony Taylor, Jim Bunning, and I think Rick Wise from
the Philles. They are nice. Bowa looked like a toothpick!

Arco put out at least one set of the Yankees (possibly two years)I believe it was 1972 and/or '73
they are 8x10's right? The Yankee ones were anyways.

    Murcerfan -- Yep, 8X10's.

Aconte -- It sounds like ARCO had a regional issue for every major city they had outlets for. I'd be curious to know what other cities/teams had these.

    Dude,

I still have many of these (including the Clemente) originally given away at Arco stations upon purchasing a full tank of gas. In Bedford County, Pirates and Phillies were availble. They are lovely and one day I will have a complete set (as opposed to mine with tack-holes in the tops)

I can still remember the evening when our car was filled and the attendant (yes, attendants once filled the cars image ) handed my dad the Clemente! Oh those were the days!

  • Atlantic Richfield or Arco released its inital set in 1969 as a Gas Station give away in 1969. These pastel portraits were done by the artisit John Wheeldon. I have uploaded an image of one here. This set featured 12 Red Sox Players.

In 1971 Arco Released 4 Photo Sets of the following teams :

Red Sox , Yankees, Phillies and Pirates. Each set had 12 players from its respective teams.

Here is a photo from the 69 set.

By the way they still pump your gas in NJ. In fact it is against the law to pump your own....
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning to dance in the rain.
  • Wheeldon did a similar set for Super Valu grocery Stores in 1970, depicting the Minnesota Twins. Very nice!!!

    LW,

Where might I find a reference listing ALL the Arco regional drawings and portraits for ALL of Arco's given years? This would be a fun endeavor to pursue when I get burned out on the card chase.

    Thanks in advance, Bill
