Finally found a Holy Grail of sorts...

Long story short - I've been looking for one of these for a while. However, I don't have the kind of cash to throw around that a lot of people in the hobby do - I'm still in school and there are definitely a lot better ways to spend my money than on cardboard pictures with nice corners, but the hobby makes me happy so I buy a little something every now and then. I found this on Naxcom and was able to get it for a whole lot less than I thought the seller would take. I'm really happy because even though it's not perfect, it is going to PSA for grading as soon as I get it and it will be the first one graded. Then straight on to my set registry. 1973 Nolan Ryan Topps Candy Lid!
Front
Back
I don't know what to expect for a grade - probably a 5 or a 6. The chipping on the back isn't halping it much, but the centering is a lot better than the only other one I've ever seen (in the last Mastro auction). Hey Keith or Scott - what kind of a weight do you thinnk this guy should have???

Collecting Nolan Ryan cards (68-94) and 1971 Topps
You can suggest to Joe what the weight of a card should be... the "10" is measured as the PSA 8 price of a 1968 Topps... I know the 68 OPC, 68 VZ, 74 Deckle should price at "11" by that rationale, but that's another story!
According to Nolan News, the Candy lid prices at 250 top 500 in NM. I would suggest to Joe a weight of about 5 or 6. I think that would be in line with other weights.
You know, when we submit a new master checklist, we should submit suggested weights across the board from .5 up to 10. They'd appreciate our input.
That is a VERY nice find!!! I think that may grade as high as a 7 if you don't have any scuffs or marks on it. How much did it set you back if you don't mind? Kit Young has been pushing one w/o a tab for $100 for about a year now.
Just wanted to repost the PM Keith - stuff like this is what makes the hobby so great for me. Granted, this is really the first "great find" I've ever had. For each one of these, I'm sure there will be 10 "wax boxes purchased from overtimecards" type deals.
<< <i>According to Nolan News... >>
Okay, what is Nolan News?
Just thought I'd post my excitement from you PM... That is one heck of a deal you got! I also have a feeling it will grade higher than a 5 or 6. I love ot hear stories about someone who gets a card of a player they really love and they didn't get gouged in the process! Way to go!
is 2.50. set weight is determined by value ($) in psa-8 condition. it gets alittle haywire though in the hard to find items. there will be no examples of anything ever graded as high as an 8. soooo,, its guess work time. I have noticed that ryan items are more expensive when
graded the same (as bench) so you may get a 4, possibly a 5 grade weight. hope this helps.
kinda strange

Hey Mudflap02,
I bought the other one of those 73 Topps Candy Cup lids, except I suck at bartering so I paid full price.
Will you negotiate my card purchases from now on? Say a 15% finders fee for every tough to find card?
Let me know,

4-Sharp-Corners 401-K Plan! LOL! I also like the performance of the Discount Sportscard (DSL) Fund!
What's this? I missed out on 2 Candy Lids? I'm getting lazy! Nice going Scott, are you going to grade yours too?
Ok, I am about to give up on this one. I can't for the life of me find a MINT condition 1988 Score Nolan Ryan. I have gone through 8 wax boxes, 4 sets, and 12 card purchases from various card stores and I still don't have one without screwed corners. The wax boxes are utterly f**ng useless, g*d D**n mini mother F**ng motion cards, 99% of the cards have corners in need of viagra. The sets all seem to have white touches on the corners and the ones from the cardstores all exhibit the same properties. Anybody have a PSA 9 or PSA 10, I do the EOMint and pay top dollar for one.
While I'm ranting what f**ng brainiac at Donruss thought it was a good f**ng Idea to cello wrap the d**n sets! All the cards are friggin useless, the corners are destroyed. Those cello wrappers are on there tighter than size 3 jeans on a size 4 female.
Guess it was a bad night to open these wax boxes and sets.

Have you looked at an 88 Score in BGS 9.5 and tried to cross it over? They can be picked up regularly for less than $15 - I got mine for around $11 and it's a solid 9, maybe an 11 or 12. I have one I'm going to send in with some other crossovers later on (in a month when nothing good catches my eye on eBay, ie Febtober). I still don't have the nuts to crack anything decent and submit it raw. I bought some BCCG trash to practice on and I felt like the Elephant Man trying to do open heart surgery - needless to say the results weren't pretty.
Scott- did you buy yours off Naxcom as well?
As far as the Nolan Ryan Mafia goes, we run this town.
I'll look into the BGS thing, but I have been toasted so many times by BGS/BVG graded stuff that I don't know if I want to go that route.

If this is the Ryan Cosa Nostra can I be the Godfather... at least until Scott puts out a hit on me? LOL! I have the last name for it you goombahs!
Scott, I got my PSA 9 88 Score from a BGS 9.5 cross as well... I bought two of them and one was clearly not going to make the grade, but the other was sharp as a tack and crossed to the 9. I may have had $35 into the two of them so it wasn't too bad. I think BGS is ok with the modern cheap stuff... just stay away from OPCs and anything vintage for more than $50 in raw value and I think you'll be ok. I even crossed a 88 Kenner SLU card from BGS 9 to PSA 9 so it's worth the risk most times!
Now, Scott, I want that 85 Topps Mini in PSA 9... and I'm gonna make you an offer you can't refuse! You own any horses?
The cards came in yesterday, I love that FGA 10 1988 Topps Ryan, bet that would be a PSA 7 in a crossover.
Wasn't there a flurry at some point last year of raw 1985 Topps Mini's Ryans? I thought you picked one up?

I thought you might like that FGA 10 Ryan! It'll make a good coaster for a cup o' java! LOL! Can't beat that Humpty Dumpty Ryan though!
I bid on the PSA 10 in MHCC auction... came up short by $400 before the vig. I did have somehting else going on a raw one, but I pulled the plug for fear it was trimmed... so, I am still without a copy.

Keith , have you looked at that list in my signature? If I started collecting anything else I'd have to go back to mac & cheese every night and drink domestic beer.
Dave
Although I do have about 6 graded Ryan cards and probably 70-80 different issues raw . hmmmmm

Mac and cheese tastes pretty good, and you can always start making home brew! LOL! 6 graded and 75 raw? You're well on your way!

I wonder how there can be evidence of trimming on a hand cut card? Oh well- just goes to show how great of a pickup those Hostess cards were.
A PSA 6 on that Candy Lid is nothing to sneeze at! I knew that looked nicer than a PSA 5... guess it couldn't pull a 7 though as I predicted. Too bad on the Dell Stamp... did you tear it out or trim it out of the book?
This is giving me the urge to make another submission!
Nice job again on that Candy Lid!
Keith, you might have to do a submission, the big dog is closing in.
On the Ryan list I will get that back to you this weekend with the card weight included, that way you can let me know what you think and we can propose the list to everyone else. Then with a consensus we can have BJ update the Master set and the Topps set, because both are woefully lacking.
