Anybody bought raw from WayneVarner?

I know they've got a good rep. with graded cards, just curious if anyone has ever bought raw from them. They've got some reasonable prices on some vintage commons that a friend is putting together. Thanks for any advice.

I've purchased some raw 41 Playballs from him in the past... his grading standards are pretty good... maybe a tad over-graded (NM may be EX-MT) on some cards, but overall my experience has been good... I get his catalog and purchase occasionally.

Good luck with the vintage commons!

One of the nicest guys out there. Once, on a busy Saturday at the SF show he covered his table and walked me thru the show to find a card I really wanted that he'd seen- then wouldn't take as much as a cup of coffee for doing it. I've bought from him pretty regularly over the years (though thru the mail so I was a stranger to him at the time). In my limited experience about half the cards graded out at what he said, the other half a grade lower. He won't promise a given grade, but will always promise that a card will grade. Try a few cards and see how you do- and I"m sure if you call him or Bill they will give you a very detailed description of the card.

Chris - ditto Griffins; Wayne is as dependable as sunrise and a great card guy to work with. You can always tell the good ones if their voices have a genuine smile, even on the phone.

Wayne and Bill are both probably the nicest guy's in the bussiness, I have bought a ton of stuff from them and have been happy with 99% of my purchases except for one...I bought a 1952 bowman campy (raw) and submitted it to psa, I recieved a "No Grade" due to the card being a "miscut" the card had what appeared to be a small diamond cut so I called Bill and got a full refund. One other time I bought a 1956 topps Global graded (8) Mays for $650.oo (book price) and attempted to crossover to a PSA holder and got DENIED!!, Well I called Wayne and explained to him what I did and he gave Me the option to send it back to him and get credit towards another purchase. I cant say enough good things about these guys. The BEST dealers in my opinion.

    Wayne Varner = 1st. class!!!

I met Wayne and the guys at the National last year. He took the time to talk about Kellogg's even though he didn't have any to sell. I rambled on about oddball and Discs, and I truly believe he listened to every word I spoke. I remember him sitting at his table 'kinda leaning forward on his showcases, loaded with Goudey's and vintage Topps. Very nice guy...

Well...... about 2 weeks after the National, I receive 3 of the 6 1975 test MSA discs from Wayne. These discs are the rarest of all. A little note inside read....."Enjoy the cards..no charge", I almost fell over. Those cards now reside in my 1975 MSA Test set on the Registry. (Wayne..If you're lurking...MANY THANKS!!...)

I highly recommend Wayne. Pure and simple class......

    ditto

Wayne and Bill are two great guys to talk to. The pricing is good and the service is great. There are PSA dealers who ship on time and provide the service we expect, and then there are dealers that ship on time, provide great service, and who are also a pleasure to talk to.

There are only a handful of these types, and Wayne and Bill are two of them.

Wayne and Bill are incredible. I have bought four cards from them which they graded nrmt. I got the four graded and three of the four came back a PSA 8. These cards are $300 cards in PSA 8 holders and they sold them to me for $125 each. They are no fools and they truely care about the hobby.

I bought a lot of raw cards from Wayne Varner in the '90's and never had any problems with them. I recall buying a '59 Topps Bobby Layne from them via mail order and they graded it NM-Mint and PSA later graded it 9.
  • Wayne and Bill are first class people and dealers, you will not have a problem in dealing with them.
