Does a COA really matter?

Just wondering what assurance a COA really provides, since often it is just a generic certificate that could be sent along with any autograph in the seller's inventory. Does it really prove the autograph you bought is genuine?

  • A COA or LOA is only as good as the company that is distributing the product. It is commonly known that some companies represent certain athletes (Michael Jordan and Lebron James with Upper Deck Authenticated, D. Jeter and Mark McGwire with Steiner Sports, and Sammy Sosa and A-Rod with Authentic Sports Investments). It does help with authenticity if the items come with certificates from the athletes respective companies. You only need to look at ebay for autographed items and look at the difference in closing prices for authenticated and non-authenticated items. image
