Bittersweet Grades

I sent in 50 cards mostly later 60's & mid 70's baseball then some Baseball minor league and a few hockeys. I got my first taste of disappointment after 3 rounds of satisfying results. Lots of 8's that I think could have been 9's. But there are a few in there that left me scratching my head. A '68 Gibson Hurls Shutout I thought was incredible but I even conceded it would only get a 9 as it wasn't dead even. No notches front or back and no surface scratches. It got an 8. I think someone at PSA may have dropped a '64 Young Aces Downing/Boutin card as I wouldn't have sent it for $15 to get graded to only get a 5 as well as a '68 Ron Santo that received a 6. I was stunned to get a 76 Schmidt back as a 9 when I was sure it was an 8. And I am relieved that as of 150+ cards sent in overall to PSA in the last 2 months, none of my '50's/60's baseball came back trimmed. But in this lot, a 67 Jean Ratelle I bought at a Giant's Stadium show back in 94-ish that I thought had a chance at a 10 unfortunately is coming back un-holdered. At least I am happy that was the only one. 3 OC's I received that I need to investigate as well.

But it feels real sweet that I finally got my first PSA 10: a 1986 Pro Cards West Palm Beach Randy Johnson. 1 of 6. Hall of famer's true rookie card going to the vault.

I'm off the schneid!

And if you ask them about it the first thing they "mention" is maybe you packed it wrong. At least thats what they said to my corner dink on a 1950s card. Yeah I would send that.

  • That's funny because I actually used the box PSA previously sent holdered cards back to me in, put the card saver 1's in there, and peanuts in there to keep it tight and then placed that box in a bigger box with peanuts between the 2 boxes. Oh well, they weren't big $ cards but it can be frustrating.

The 5 probably had a small surface wrinkle somewhere. Usually when somebody gets a card back they think is NMMT and it grades a 5 it is because of a back wrinkle.

I had 2 53 parkies that were dead 8's when I sent them in, only to get them both back as 4's with a major, and I mean pretty major, crease running down the back of each. Its as if they were basically bent in half if that's possible. Who knows what happened - but I can assure you that a blind monkey would have caught the creases if they were there when I sent them in.

Sometimes, crap just happens. I just sold them for a loss and moved on.
