OT- Have you read this?

I apologize for the OT but I am not that comfortable venturing into the Open Forum as the content of this book may polarize the OF's members, which I hesitate to do.

Has anyone read The DaVinci Code, and if so, your thoughts. Truly a gripping, shocking book...

I haven't read it, but I saw a History Channel program about a town in France that claims to have safeguarded evidence about Jesus' relationship with Mary Magadelene. The show even hinted the bloodline of Jesus continues in the town.

Read it and was fascinated - much is based on fact, lots on conjecture.

Dan Brown's book is not reflective of the finest writing known to Western man, nor are his characters more than will o' the wisp deep, but I can not put it down. The sum of the whole seems to be greater than the sum of the parts. I have read scathing reviews by Catholic writers and pundits, the opposite from the other extreme, but what a book! 40 hardcover printings into the millions in one year...image

A few friends have told me I MUST read this book, but after looking at it in the book store I don't think I could get into it.

Yes, I have. It's a great yarn -- but it's a yarn. It's so full of historical holes, it makes a sieve look like the Holy Grail. I understand that Darrell Bock has written a good "antidote" to at least the religious aspects in his Breaking the Da Vinci Code. I have it, but haven't had a chance to read it yet. I can tell you that the religious ceremony purported to be Cathar would have been abominable to the Cathar "perfects." There's a lot of loose ends with the history too, much of it based on the writings of Graham Hanc_ck et al.

I wouldn't worry about polarizing the people on the Open Forum. We have been that way for a very long time.
