Nolan- Am I Missing Something?

Why is this card so much? Is it that 3 letter word in the title?

Because the seller made a sacrifice to the correct deity. Give it time - I plan on getting mine for less than $200. See example of PSA 9 1986 Topps I paid $35 for yesterday. Probably still too much, but I love those cards!
  • Bighurt4Bighurt4 Posts: 384
Obviously, I pray to the wrong deity. There is no way I will pay more than $200 for that card, considering there are still $5 specials yet to be graded, mine for one.

On the '86 cards, I have a vending case coming to break and grade so I will hold off on any big bids there. BTW, I am sick of bidding against you, ever thought about a vacation, lol. My Ebay name is befmbb, I'll see you out there.

    Good luck,

Hey Win, SMR is $140 for a "9" and $700 for a "10". I guess I've been drinking some Haterade or maybe the Green-Eyed Monster is hanging out at my place, lol.

Yeah, I'm tired of bidding against you too - like the 85 sticker you jacked tonight! I don't seem to win any of your auctions though- I remember you had some 91 UD 10's (I could be wrong) that I had my eye on that went for something ridiculous like $5 to 7155ds, the uberbidder.
  • mudflap02mudflap02 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭
Uberbidder - his $5 winning bid was probably a max of around $40.
  • Bighurt4Bighurt4 Posts: 384
    Mudflap,

I know, I spent sooo much time picking those out, had fun doing it. Then it went so low, I decided to put the minimum bid I could live with instead of just a low bid to generate a bidding war. Anyway, he got a great card. BTW, you are next on the Master list, although you seem to stay a fair distance ahead. As much as I love Frank Thomas, I love the friendly competition of the Ryan set so much more.

Yeah, it kind of comes in spurts. I haven't done much for the past month or so, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve in the next few weeks. It's gonna be awesome, and I'm not gonna lie. In the words of the great Don West, "If these don''t make you happy, then nothing in this world will make you happy."
  • Brent and Mudflap02,

The 1978 Topps Ryan PSA 9 is going to continue to go for between $325 and $425 until a PSA 10 is unearthed. With only 13 PSA 9's there is not much of a supply for the demand, thus the higher prices. This is also a deceptively tough card, centering is a big issue, print smudges another, and surface bubbles are prevelent as well. I went through 6 Vending Boxes, 2 Wax Boxes, 1 Cello Box, and 6 Card stores and I ended up with 2 PSA 8's, 1 PSA 9OC, 4 PSA 7's, and 6 that aren't worth grading. I had to buy my PSA 9 on eBay for I believe $400-425.

35,000+ 1978's have been graded so far and only 13 PSA 9 Ryans, so I would hazard a guess that maybe there are 10-15 more PSA 9's out there somewhere and maybe 2-3 PSA 10's. Who knows when these will be found and then let alone graded. The only tougher issue of the 70's is the 1971 and 1975, I think there are 16 1971 PSA 9's and only 8 or 9 1975 PSA 9's.

Good hunting and don't beat each other up too bad! image

Good information Scott, that will factor into future considerations but I guess there are other priorities for me right now. Lots of fish are frying, lol. BTW, nice job on your last submission, I had to get a Wet-Vac for the drool, lol.

    Boys;

Nice to see some friendly bickering! This is the plus side of being at 75%... I don't have to get into too many bidding wars these days... but when I do, oh man, it gets pricey! That's the downside...

BTW... I think Scott is right... there is stilllots of 78 unopened out there and I expect the Ryan Pop will double in PSA 9 in the next year or two... like you guys, I'll hang onto my 8 until the price gets into the $250 area.

Jeff, nice pickup on the 86 Topps! That is the lowest that card has ever sold for!

SPAM ALERT! Shameless plug warning: I am desperate to unload my extra Ryans (I am sick of looking!) Please take a look at what's left... if you want something, you won't get a better deal! (Or maybe swap!!)

If you think that's bad, then try buying a 1975 Topps PSA 9 Ryan.

  • There seems to be some Ryan experts chiming in to this post, one of which I'm not. Curious, what would a 1971 OPC PSA 7 Ryan fetch?

You should be able to get $100+ for that 71 OPC Ryan in PSA 7 if the centering and eye appeal is there... one of the Ryan guys on this thread may be interested in it... good luck!

this sure beats cutting the lawnimage here is what else i dug out. the sticker , fleer atlantic and opc are gone40. i have 2 sets of the opc ryans left and only 1 93 inaugural (but i want 10 bucks for that because its a 200 dollar set and i am breaking it for the ryan)and the revco.yes the following a o pee chees there is no difference between them and the topps other than the french writing and o pee chee logo on the back.

Why would Ryan 9's be any more scarce than others in 1978? I realize they are since my Bench PSA 9 is one of 73, compared to 13 Ryans. But I'm not sure why. I thought Topps stopped doing the different series around 1974. Another weird thing: According to the pop. report, there are 188 PSA 9 Ryan strikeout leaders, more than any other grade in 1978.
  • Jrdolan,

There are others who could probably answer this better, but I believe it may have something to do with where the Ryan is on the Sheet. Some positions are a lot tougher than others to get high grade cards from.

I would bet that if someone checked the Ryan might be in the middle of its production sheet which would make centering cuts unreliable. Again this is just a guess.

    67Standup,

The last 1971 OPC Nolan Ryan PSA 7 that I saw on Ebay finished over $150+, I would probably pass at this time since I have a PSA 6, I would rather jump to a PSA 8 or PSA 9 image

    Jack;

i definitely find those 3 cool! In fact, before I graded them, I kept them in that order in my binder pages... kinda like having one of those flip books! LOL!

The Ryan must have been positioned near a corner of the press sheet because it is often badly off-center, with print marks galore... you just don't see that many that look gradeable.

I bought a box of '78's from Overtimecards (I know, I know) and that was a bust. I am trying Ebay but will get it at my price, or it will be a hole in my set for a while.

Great info everyone and fun pics, thanks.

    Hey Big Hurt-

I bought a box of '79 from Overtime Cards a couple of months ago and it was a complete ripoff. I am 99% sure it was searched. Out of the entire box I pulled less than 10 that were even on the SMR price guide, and they were absoulutely shot. The cards were shipped in a 12 pack of Rolling Rock turned inside out. I was just getting into the hobby and didn't know if I had just gotten a bad box or what. Anybody have any info on this guy?
  • Bighurt4Bighurt4 Posts: 384
    Mudflap,

I think he made the packs himself, I got a card with a wax stain in the middle of the pack. Also, many of the cards had dinged corners. There were NO cards in the SMR in the packs I opened. I only opened 19 of the 36 "packs" to preserve the evidence, such as it was. I think it's sad that someone would sell their integrity so cheaply.

  • You guys have to watch out for these kind of jerks, if you want a fair shake at unopened stuff, look to the bbcardkid auctions on eBay, he has a web site as well www.bbcardkid.com. Bought 90% of my unopened stuff from him, you pay a premium because he has quite a following but theres a reason for that, he's legit.

There are times on eBay when pack rappers, empty wax boxes, and bulk cards are sold, this is were a lot of "unopened" wax is generated just by jerks like you described. Watch eBay and watch who wins this crap and then those are people to stay away from. As far as I am concerned there is "NO" legitimate reason for buying lots of "unused pack wrappers" except for the express reason of deciving someone down the road.

  • Jackstraw,

Don't mistake some of my earlier posts about the Nolan Ryan Master set and cards that should be and shouldn't be included. I collect Nolan Ryan cards no matter what they are, but what I, Con40, Mudflap02, SDSportsfan, and others are trying to do is create as complete a player set as possible without getting into the mass crap sets produced by Pacific. These will be the cards that we all feel are worthy of being in PSA holders. The post career stuff, I like alot, but I don't want to pay PSA to grade them. They will sit in Three ring albums on a shelf along with the Starting lineup figures and Ryan photos that I have. I also like some of the cooler looking game used cards and some of the Finest refractors kick butt too. image
